For those of you who just tuned in...

Rene440 down in the great state of TX has been tantalizing me with visions of 18yr old whiskies...and as I live in Bush Alaska, we are limited to various forms of rotgut as our sole fare..."Trade
Whiskey" if you will...

So I pose an open question: what is the WORST whiskey you have ever suffered? All entries will be judged by Bloofy...

The WORST?? I don't know, and I'm mostly into bourbon/rye. If I was going to go for the worst, I have about five or six bourbons that I absolutely hate. I'm almost sorry I do, because I wish I did like them, but I don't. I can think of two or three right off the bat, but the whole list would take me some time.

I have purged the memory of it so completely that I can't remember what it was called. Needless to say, it was BAAAAAAAAAAAAD.

McCormick - that is some nasty stuff. Long ago, when I was even younger and dumber, I made the mistake of haveing a few apprentice alkies for friends, and they always bought McCormick products b/c they are the absolute cheapest whisky availible. I tried the 'whiskey', and it was terrible. Only tried that once.... drank a good bit of the 'vodka' though - it smelled like diesel, but one could choke it down if mixed half and half with OJ.

After a bit of experimentation, I discovered that I actually do not enjoy getting intoxicated to any noticable extent, and I have a job now too, so I will never again drink anything that terrible. If I want to drink whiskey now, I will get some more Woodford Reserve :wink:

Lemme get this straight, BushRat. We gotta send a bottle of each of the mentions here to Bloofington and he'll make the final decision, right?

<Run Bloofington, RUN!!!!!>

Now, we really might want to compress the topic a bit. After all:

Whiskies include: bourbon, rye, Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey, single malt whisky, Canadian whisky, corn whiskey, and Tennessee whiskey.

I'll have to think about the Branded, legal stuff over a snort tonight. I know I've had a few bad episodes.

Now, I've had some "Trade" in AK, TN, NH, TX, AK, GA and NY. I have to say the bottom of the barrel of this lot (and BushRat might agree) is from Alaska. Something about the "malt" diesel they use up there in the Frozen, going to heat, going to cool, going into moi? BushRat, any clue?

Speaking of Diesel, here's a filly pounder for you that actually isn't as scary as it sounds. And yes, it is a bit off topic. I'm just used to lots of word association tests at home here in Trembling Meadows and I guess it's now habitual . . .

(The) Diesel

Ingredients:

* 1/2 pint Lager
* 1/2 pint Cider
* 1 dash Blackcurrant cordial

+1, Sadly, altogether too many of the guys I grew up with never came to the conclusion that drinking is to be enjoyed, not memory wiped.

I see I'm not the only one here who hates Woodford's Reserve. Talk about diesel! I've tried 59 bourbons, and there's about six or seven that I detest, and Woodford's is one of them. There's two or three I'm pretty ho hum on, and the other 45-50 I'd be happy to drink any time.

So far, in no particular order:

#1 Woodford's Reserve
#2 AK Diesel
#3 McCormick
#4 Old Plain Wrap
#5 Old Stinkin Farmer
#6 BAAAAAAAAAAAAD

#'s 2, 4, 5 and 6 are included as ingested tested or memory served.

My question Bloofington, is what are the names of the offenders you cite obliquely?

By far the worst I've tried: Willie Nelson's Whiskey River.
But, didn't it come with a free guitar pick? That's something.

No, it didn't. I know why he gives away picks. He has no idea how to play guitar.

He never claimed to be a guitarist, but if one listens closely with an unbiased mind, he appears to have an intuitive grasp of jazz, rock, pop, blues, folk, country, and he isn't afraid to play with meter in the pop music genre -- something that most professionals would fail at. Songwriter, yes. Performer, yes. He's also one of the most approachable people in the business on the planet. He seems to please a vast audience. You into the music end of things?

Back on topic, there used to be a club about 4 blocks from my house called Whiskey River, bumped up and all countryfied with a nod to the title of the song. They used Jack Black for their well whiskey. Even with Jack in the hole, the club folded relatively quickly.

I think I'd add Jack to the list. Highly over rated and not that good. Terrible morning after effects.

I really liked Jack when it was at 90 proof. Some real flavor. I stuck with it as it went to 86. Now at 80, I won't touch it. I prefer Jim Beam Black now.

LOL
I see your memory of the downward spiral of Jack is intact. Indeed, for some unfathomable reason, they dropped the RPM's and then they added a frickin' governor to their flagship product and it just fails to run with the big boys now.

Old Whiskey River is detestable. Absolute yechhhhhh!!! And I don't play the guitar either, so the heck with the guitar pick. Another one is Elijah Craig 18 year old. I think that's what the Union Pacific used in their super edition gas turbine locomotives back in the 60's. This stuff is horrible. When I can think of the others, I'll try to get back here.

I would have to say the worst whisky I ever had (and I've had some bad ones) was Guckenheimers' Sp?

I think they aged that stuff in green pine barrels. Did I say aged, if it was aged it couldn't have been for more than a week.

I tried Old Crow once when I was poor and desperate (amazing what stupid 18 year olds will drink :roll: ). Then a little later, I actually tried something even worse :shock: ; It was called Old Log Cabin. Some of the nastiest stuff ever made. Only saw it in a liquor store once. Some of my friends also tried it. A whole bunch of wanna be alcoholics all rated it as the worst whiskey they had ever had.

1. Old Crow - Nasty
2. Woodford Reserve - Overated, overpriced, tastes awful
3. Whiskey River - Willie should be ashamed of himself.
4. PM Whiskey - Whiskey version of MD 20/20
5. Jack Daniels - The watered down version
6. Russell's Reserve - Why did Jimmy ruin this by watering it down?

Bloof. I'm surprised that you didn't like EC 18yo?
