Vince try the 1000oakbarrel.com. We could start a "cottage industry"

sounds like a lot of work, but I would need to get a bigger still, mine isnt up to the task of hi vol. production, & I am lazy to boot ! hahahaha Enjoy, Vince

Get the 1 liter barrels and fill then with your brandy and give them to you friends (ME) for gifts. What a great Man you would be.

since I run my still at a low temp I need to run the stuff through a few times to get the desired product, ( like 6 times or more) , I take it apart & clean it between each run, & it only holds 3/4 of a gallon to start with, I need 15 gallons to get one gallon of finished product, it takes along time to get that, & the Boss hates it when I am in the kitchen till 4 am ! , I will get some to you soon, I have a batch started, should be finished in a few weeks.
Enjoy, Vince

Excuse me for making a suggestion BUT if you freeze the initial batch you can reduce the liquid by a factor of four. That should speed things up a bit. That was the method that I converted 16 gals of peach wine to 2 gals of very drinkable peach brandy. I used the plastic milk gal jugs. Put them a good cheast freezer for two nights, open the small unfrozen center with a long screwdriver. Save whatever pours then you can start distilling. I still think filling one of those barrels and hiding it for a year or two would be great.

Here is a link worth checking out regarding making spirits at home. I’m not here to rain on anyone’s parade, but unfortunately our government frowns on it.

I make about 10 gallons total a year some times not even that much, the little bit I make, sure isnt going to cut out the tax man .
I think we are allowed to make some for personal use, I never sell it, I do give some of it away , but most of it gets drank , right here, by me & some friends, it is a lot of work but it is a lot of fun,
Tom I did try freezing the stuff, but it just didnt taste the same, , it got a plastic taste for some reason, maybe it was just in my mind , right now My brother has the still & is making a little grappa
Enjoy, Vince

Vince - they are pretty clear on this subject...

Can I produce beer, wine or spirits for my personal or family use without paying Federal excise tax and filing Federal paperwork?

Spirits
You cannot produce spirits for beverage purposes without paying taxes and without prior approval of paperwork to operate a distilled spirits plant.

When it comes to beer...

(a) Any adult may produce beer, without payment of tax, for personal or family use and not for sale. An adult is any individual who is 18 years of age or older. If the locality in which the household is located requires a greater minimum age for the sale of beer to individuals, the adult shall be that age before commencing the production of beer. This exemption does not authorize the production of beer for use contrary to state or local law.

(b) The production of beer per household, without payment of tax, for personal or family use may not exceed:

(1) 200 gallons per calendar year if there are two or more adults residing in the household, or (2) 100 gallons per calendar year if there is only one adult residing in the household.
(c) Partnerships except as provided in Sec. 25.207, corporations or associations may not produce beer, without payment of tax, for personal or family use.

And wine...

Wine for personal or family use

(a) General. Any adult may, without payment of tax, produce wine for personal or family use and not for sale.

(b) Quantity. The aggregate amount of wine that may be produced exempt from tax with respect to any household may not exceed:

(1) 200 gallons per calendar year for a household in which two or more adults reside, or
(2) 100 gallons per calendar year if there is only one adult residing in the household.
(c) Definition of an adult. For the purposes of this section, an adult is any individual who is 18 years of age or older. However, if the locality in which the household is located has established by law a greater minimum age at which wine may be sold to individuals, the term ``adult'' will mean an individual who has attained that age.

(d) Proprietors of bonded wine premises. Any adult, defined in Sec. 24.75(c), who operates a bonded wine premises as an individual owner or in partnership with others, may produce wine and remove it from the bonded wine premises free of tax for personal or family use, subject to the limitations in Sec. 24.75(b).

(e) Limitation. This exemption should not in any manner be construed as authorizing the production of wine in violation of applicable State or local law. Except as provided in Sec. 24.75(d), this exemption does not otherwise apply to partnerships, corporations, or associations.

(f) Removal. Wine produced under this section may be removed from the premises where made for personal or family use including use at organized affairs, exhibitions or competitions, such as home winemaker's contests, tastings or judgings, but may not under any circumstances be sold or offered for sale. The proprietor of a bonded wine premises shall pay the tax on any wine removed for personal or family use in excess of the limitations provided in this section and shall also enter all quantities removed for personal or family use on ATF F 5120.17, Report of Bonded Wine Premises Operations.

So, in short, you can make your own beer and wine at home with no issues. But when it comes to spirits, you may get a visit from the BATFE if they find out.

I wonder what the tax would be on 10 gallons, I dont think it would be all that much, maybe I should just pay the few bucks & not worry about the BATF.

It seems it's not illegal to own a still, just operate one. I live in a pretty big house and there's this room where a still would enhance the decor. I wonder how much a bran spakin new 25 gallon copper still would cost? By the way, there's more than enough room to put a couple of those 25 gallon oak barrels in there also for decor only.

Anybody know where I can buy some 50lb sacks white corn, wheat, and malt? For decor only.

Vince: follow Fernando's link and read all about it. If after doing that you still are not completely convinced that the government does not want you making your own hooch, then by all means, begin the application process. There are contact numbers on the TTB website and the personnel will answer any questions you may have.

The application and bonding processes are as complex as you might expect. The requirements for production and testing equipment are stringent. The reporting requirements are quite demanding.

The alternative is: "Don't get caught". Either way, you should know what you are getting into. The penalties are no joke.

Now that wuzzagrunt and Fernando (the BOSS) have spoken, I expect to see these posts die a quick death. I'm not kidding. When a moderator whose responsibility is NOT this forum steps in with a suggestion, it should be carefully read and heeded. When the boss steps in, there is no more discussion and will be no jokes. Anyone who presses issues with higher ups at AmBack (I'm NOT one of them) should already understand that the plank has been extended off the starboard side of the ship. It is your choice to walk it. The water's pretty cold this time of year.

I genuinely love some of the folks here, but just as I have had to fall in line, both here as a loose cannon of a Moderator, and a member on another board, so should anyone who wishes to continue to enjoy this web site. If I can do it, anyone can.

OK No more posting about my "brandy " till I get legal,
if I do walk the plank, please put it on the" PORT " side, but I have made any of that !!! hahaha Enjoy, Vince

I'm throwing myself across the plank about halfway out to stop you from falling in. See what some people do for love and internet discussion? :sm_angel:
