Has anyone tried the stuff? Have a friend who has? What was it like?

I have a bottle of American "Absinthe" (sans Wormwood.) I really enjoy the taste but, I wonder if it tastes similar to the real thing.

I can't think of any other beverage that is more intriguing or seductive as the Green Fairy herself.

Please send PMs if you don't feel like posting.

Don't get me started on Absinthe, which is the real thing, the 140 proof European concoction, actually made from wormwood, or its 110 proof "American" counterpart, called Absente, which is actually made in Canada, I believe. There's a couple discussions here on it somewhere in the back pages. I'll just say that whether it's the 110 proof North American imitation or the real-deal European stuff, yeah, if you want to try something that doesn't really make you feel drunk, but has a similarly narcotic-like high to Jagermeister, go ahead. It'll also add some mildly hallucinatory semi-psychotropic properties to your adventure.

It's nasty tasting, very interesting stuff to fool around with just to say you did it, but I can't see having this stuff around the house to drink on a somewhat regular basis. Stuff like Jagermeister, Absente/Absinthe, Goldschlager are very popular with college kids bent on majoring in sex and drunkenness. They're also popular with rock stars, rappers, athletes and movie stars who get their pictures taken a lot. It's a "big thing" to be seen with a bottle of Jagermeister or Goldschlager in your hand, and to be a big-time athlete or movie star. Jagermeister is also combined with heroin by many young folks, including celebrities, for that REALLY narcotic effect.

Have fun with your Absinthe, and remember, if it really is the 140 proof European version, it's as illegal as Cuban cigars over here, so don't talk about it too much, or ask questions here about where to get it, etc. Thanks.

Okay, re-read your post. You've got the North American version, perfectly legal, no problems talking about it, etc. No problems talking about the European version either, members just need to remember the same rules apply as the ones about Cuban cigars. No sources. :cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh:

First of all, mix a shot of half Jagermeister and half Goldschlager - that's a Black and Gold - perfect for the Steelers game!

As for Absente/Absinthe - I used to hang with a few people that tried be in the "goth" scene and were very big on showing how "gothy" they were. Part of that was having a bottle of absinthe. I tried it and did not like it. Couldn't see the point in drinking something that didn't taste good...

Yup, that's another segment of the Absinthe/Absente crowd. The Goth crowd is also part of those who love the Jagermeister/heroin thingy.

That's funny - I always associate Jager with frat boys, not goths - very interesting!

In the 1960's, we used to transit from the Philippines to Yakuska, Japan when returning from the states. Several times, we were dumped in Sasebo, Japan. It wasn't much of a military base at the time, WWII having been wicked to it, but it was a merchant port of renown. The big thing there was to go from bar to bar, drinking a single shot of absinthe in each. This was due to the propensity of merchant sailors to sit, drink absinthe, and then tear up the bar.

We decided to do it. Went into eachbar in a long city block (about 25 of them), and had our shot. Fell into a cab at the end of the street, and went back to the military holding area. That was some really nasty stuff!!! One time did I do that!! Once ONLY!!! :D

Good move, JR. I had Absente, the North American version a bunch of times. I had the real thing once, and ONLY ONCE. Never again. There's a difference, a huge difference. Talk about getting hit by Earnie Shavers, or for that matter, Foreman in his prime. Uh oh, going down, and who knows when I'll get up? :eek:mg: :flush:

It doesn't feel like much is happening. You start off being careful. Then you have some more, still not much happening. Despite the 140 proof, it's not like 140 proof bourbon, you don't really feel drunk. So you have a bit more, and . . .

BAM!!!! You're down, and very, very out. For only The Lord knows how long.

But you still don't feel drunk. :sm_angel: :sm_angel: :sm_angel:

Is it bad that as I was reading you explanation, I heard Emeril do the BAM part?

He described it quite well. We were rolling along, young, dumb, and happy, just feeling the buzz. Trouble was, it's the first time I ever got drunker feeling after I quit drinking. I would best describe it as the "looking down on yourself" sensation. Being someone who can drink quite a bit, and who always quits before he loses it, this was an unsettling situation. It just wouldn't stop!

A friend of mine got a bottle from europe somehow ($$$). I tried a bit of it, and it was different... not bad... I didnt drink very much of it though.

It really deppends how you drink it, It is NOT to be drunk in shot form. there is a ritual to drinking Absinthe. It is a different drink all together unlike anything you have ever had, I do have a bottle, but hardly ever have any (1 a year maybe) It does not taste as nasty when drinking it the right way.
