What are people stocking up on. For me nothing really changes, I drink less mixed drinks and more Scotch this time of year and I don't know why.

I agree. There isn't much better than sitting in front of a fire in the fire place with a nice scotch on the rocks. Then again, there isn't much better than sitting out on the patio in 80 degree weather with a nice scotch on the rocks. Hmm...

This time of year brings out the English blends of pipe tobacoo, and the smokier-peatier scotches. Something about fall in the air and the smokiness of the tobacco and scotches makes me gitty.

I'm with the Cap'n, smokey peaty scotch is just too good on a brisk fall day. BTW, you going bowhunting this Sunday Capt?

All the best,

Joe

I'm going to have jump on the Scotch wagon too. I'm figuring that I'll be switching from rum to scotch and/or bourbon here relatively soon. I also tend to prefer the smaller cigars during the winter as I have to smoke them outside and the smaller ones (usually) finish faster.

Joe, I honestly quit bowhunting after I got a bird dog. Too many birds, not enough time. I have a brand new High Country Carbon Force Extreme, and I am thinking of selling it........

If you do decide to, let me know. I might just be able to take it off your hands.

All the best,

Joe

I am a newbie to scotches / bourbons / whiskeys. What is a good starter? All I have had is Jack, Jim, Makers and Woodford Reserve.

Try to find the Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve ( the older type is 101 proof, that's the one to buy...)
Or Evan Williams Single Barrel is good on the cheap, the 1996 is still around, and the 1997 vintage is debuting soon...

Bloof will come along any minute and offer up Grampa Hoo-de-doo's rare old single vintage 1907 very olde brew I'm sure.....
But what does he know?????

Actually, hammondc's starters and rmrdaddy's selections are just fine. Other than that, if budget is a consideration, there's the King Of Budget Bourbons, none other than Knob Creek, with Pure Kentucky, if you don't buy it from a gouger, running a very close second. If you have a little more money, my Nos. 9 and 11 bourbons can be had for VERY nice prices at Binny's.

Am I correct in saying that the sweetness of the 3 goes (from most sweet to least sweet)--

Bourbon (at least 51% corn, correct?), Whiskey, Scotch.

So....for a beginner, what is a good sweeter bourbon for $20-$30 or under.

Dark liqour is uncharted territory for me.

Thanks guys!

Evan Williams 1783 is a very tasty bourbon and, here in PA, goes for about $12 in the liquor store.
