For all of you Mead lovers...just read that a group of women are brewing a commemorative Mead for this year's Homebrewer's Assoc. Conf. Now you can see where I got my post name.

Very interesting. It seems that mead has made a bit of a comeback over the past decade. Glad to see some folks keeping venerable old traditions alive.

Yes I think it is. Hard to find unless Homebrewed. Considering going to the conference in June....let me know if anyone else decides to go...we can enjoy a mead and a cigar.

Can't say I've ever had mead - do they not sell it the store? Hmm - will have to see what I can do to get a hold of a sample.

my brother made some of his own mead to celebrate his wedding.
he made 25 bottles all at once. Mead (so ive been told) ages well. every year on his anniversary hes gunna crack another bottle open. I was there for the first taste. I want to be there for the last bottle.

Conference in June

Anyone here actually make mead? Reading about it tonight has piqued my interest but I'd like to try some before I jump in! I'd be willing to trade cigars/cash/my wife's cat for a sample!

I have been making a batch of mead each year for about 4 years. A couple of them came out well and a couple not so good. Will be glad to bring some out to da Burgh and share with you Cybrus. Would ship you some, but only if you promise not to ship me a cat!

I have found commercial mead in some of the high end beer stores. Here is another link to meaderies https://www.honeywine.com/ordering/meadery_listing.asp

I'd love that twoputts! I don't want to buy any because I don't want to waste the money if I don't like it.

Steve makes it also

Thanks for the conference link. I am going to try to make it. Went last year and it was awesome...nice, fun people, good beer... Let me know if anyone else plans to attend. We can taste the meade and enjoy a cigar.

The guy who puts on the NHB tournament I fight in every year home brews all kinds of stuff, including mead. This year hes making Dark Mead (made from dark honey) , Heavy Mead (25% alcohol mead), Metheglin (spiced mead), Hippocras (spiced mead with fruit juice), and bee ale (ale made from honey instead of wheat or hops). Plus hes making coffee wine, hard lemonade (damn hard actually. Its 20% alcohol), two kinds of hard iced tea, two kinds of herbal wine, and who knows what else.

I pride myself in fighting in the only NHB tournament in the country were people have forfeited from hangovers more often than injury.

now thats my kind of Tournament !!!!

Ahhhhhhh Svartorm, our dear friend Svartorm. He is a throwback to the days of men like Louis Cyr, John Grimek, Eugene Sandow, Hermann Goerner, Sig Klein, etc. He derives his Samson-like vigor and strength from the God given blessedness of the natural world around him. Mead, bread, and a set of kettlebells. :D

I style myself as more of a Georg Hackenschmidt, as he was a catch wrestler as well, but thank you for the kind words just the same. :D

Ahhhhhhh, George Hackenschmidt, another one of my heroes of yesteryear. How dare I forget him. My apologies. You are quite right. His name is equal to the others. There's only so many I could remember when I made that post. Hackenschmidt is a fine prototype to model oneself after, second to none in his realm.

I just tried Lurgashall "Special Reserve" vintage 2006 a couple nights ago. It was the first mead I've had, and was very good stuff. At $14, it wasn't too expensive either. I have no idea if Lurgashall is a good mead or a bad mead, but I liked it.
The mead tasted a lot like a fairly light somewhat sweet white wine, though much less acidic. It also had a touch of honey flavor. The aftertaste was all honey. I much prefer dry wine to sweet wine, but somehow the sweetness of the mead was pleasant rather than objectionable.

I have made a lot of mead. I enjoy a sparkling ginger mead the most. Pretty easy to make. Great shelf life. Improves over time. Imagine alcoholic Vernors gingerale. Maybe 13% alcohol. A 22 bottle over ice after yardwork will make you a different man.
