Who's Drinking Beer?

Well, about six or seven months ago I got diagnosed with Crohns Disease, an inflammatory condition of the bowel. I was forbidden to drink by my doctor due to the medication I was taking. About six weeks ago, I was able to cut back on the medication and can have a drink or two here or there. My old go-to was the Rusty Nail (Scotch and Drambuie). I've been dabbling with Macallan 12 and Laprhoaig as well.
I've started to get back into beer. Sam Adams Summer Ale has been my brew of choice so far this spring and summer. Nothing fancy, just straight out of the cooler, right out of the bottle, and down my throat. So I thought I'd throw around the question myself:

What beer(s) are you drinking?

I feel for you Chris. I was sidelined for a few years w/an inflammatory condition, mainly my duodenum. Lost major weight and could barely eat anything but soup or tuna and drank only water. Anyhoo, to make a long story short, I'm much better now but I can't handle carbonation very well so about all I can really tolerate is Guinness Draught It's not so carbonated as the other beers. Goes down smooth and doesn't bloat you out like you're getting your period The other beers (and soda) just get me belching and all bloated to no end but the Guinness is a whole different story.

The other night some coworkers and I went to a drinking establishment that has about 40 or so beers on tap. I had some of my old favorites and tried a new beer.

First I had a Half and Half ( Guiness poured on top of Harp)

Second beer I had was one of my favorite Mexican beers Bohemian

Lastly I tried a local beer that is brewed in Athens, GA: Terrapin

Terrapin has a real unique taste and I think it might become a new favorite.

That is the good stuff. I drink all the redneck beers - Pabst, Natural Light, Hamms they are good when it is hot.

The only beer I have found that I won't drink is Steel Reserve - nasty.

For a more flavorful beer I like Henry Weinhard's and for a bit fancier Newcastle. I usually only drink the heavier ones in winter such as Old Rasputin and Guiness.

There are some other Ales that use the Pub can with nitrogen widgets like Guinness. Bodingtons is one. Bass also has a Pub can but i'm not sure if they use Co2 or Nitro.

Look for a cask conditioned or real ale on tap at a microbrewery. They are very low carbonation and pulled by a pump off the keg in the original British style. Hard to find, but a good choice.

Not that hard to find any more, at least in NYC, as my friend Alex Hall, publisher of The Imbiber, whom I have mentioned on this web site in the past, has finally made his influence felt in these parts.

Of course, any new influence actually takes years to make itself widely known, but he came here on a mission to introduce English style cask conditioned ale, and his baby is growing. Having staged many, many beer festivals at The Brazen Head Pub in Brooklyn, as well as a vast number of other establishments through the years in NYC, it would appear that cask conditioned ale is indeed growing in this neck of the woods.

As a matter of fact, it is trying to keep up with him and try all the cask conditioned ales he recommended, mostly the 9%ers and above, that may have knocked the heck out of my palate and ruined it for beer drinking. It was in my second or third summer after trying my first, that I began to discover every time I drank any beer I would just get a headache, and could no longer taste much in the way of flavor.

At any rate, cask conditioned ale is a good thing if you're a beer drinker, but just remember, don't try to keep up with an experienced Englishman if you're new to the realm. I've never been the same!!!

Tons. Seattle is filthy with western micros and so many of them are very worth drinking.

Today I had a portland brewed Bridgeport ESB. Fantastic red/blonde ale.

Deschutes and New Belgium breweries produce nothing but quality brews. And there's one from Missoula that makes a brown called Moose Drool that's a go to. Oh, and Pyramid (about 2 miles from my house) ... I could go on and on

Is there a particular 'breed' you favor? Brown, red, blonde, pale ales, porters, stouts, lagers? That might help me narrow a recommendation.

Love New Castle, most Blegum Trappist Ales, Guiness, Harp, Boddingtons, Negro Modelo Amber. Won't touch the rockgut stuff anymore.

I have aquired a taste for stronger beers.

I will drink almost any beer; I am not too picky. For Sunday football I like Coors light because of the ease at which it can be comsumed and the price. I have gotten away from Sam Adams as I don't like his recent stuff; too much hops and not enough flavor. I also have started to try the Belgian trappist ales. I like those a lot and the Rocqufort (sp) 10 in my current favortie all time beer along with Cosendonk Abbey brown. I just had the Blue Moon Honey Moon summer beer. Fairly good. Nothing to write home about, but a good summer change of pace beer.

Ah, yes. Black and Tans are very good. I love one after a big steak dinner. I got the chance to go the market last night and pick up some more Sam Adams Summer Ale. I need to put some in the cooler tonight when I grill the beef kabobs. Maybe finish it off with a PSD4.

Speaking of Sam Adams, the only expression I don't care for is the Cherry Wheat. My fav is the Octoberfest. Man does that stuff sell out fast around here!!!

Any local NJ/PA/NY folks try the River Horse line out of Lambertville??

As many beer purists will put it down, Sam Adams Octoberfest is my favorite from Hime. A case will last less than two days in my house. Its so good. One little secret; its my secrent indrediant for chili. Ok, not so secret now.
