Great Beers

Well, I've popped open my first Chimay Blue Ale. Man, this thing is full of flavor. A couple of months ago, South Carolina lifted it's archaic law that only allowed beers with 5% alcohol or lower to be sold in the state. This Chimay is the first of the "new" beers that I've tried since the law was lifted. Are there others that y'all recommend? More and more of these things are on the shelves every day, and I'm definitely going to try more of these.

Unfortunately, I can no longer enjoy beer, but you sir, are on your way to true beer drinking enjoyment. I will chime in with names that I remember from my 15 years of drinking real beer, as they come up. Some that pop up readily are Duvel, Sri Lanka's Lion Stout, anything from the Ommegang Brewery, anything from Sierra Nevada or Anchor breweries, Samichlaus, Tripel, Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout. That's it for now. Happy hunting and drinking!!!

While I'm not familiar with most that Bloofington mentioned, I can say Anchor brews some great stuff. Anchor Steam is a must try if you haven't already.

I am by no means a beer connoisseur but on a hot day like today a ice cold Corona with a lime wedge is heaven to me.

I have a store within 5 miles of me that has over 500 different beers. I have triedquite a few. The Trappist ales are some of my favorite. But kick my A$$. I do drink alot of Corona though, can drink it all day and never feel a buzz. Enjoy the new world of good beer!!!

magic hat #9, and their seasonal currently Hocus Pocus.

BIG RED,Budweiser the "all american" beer

  • None of my beers would be classed as great by connoisseurs, but I have some likes:

    [list:3g6b4blv]American
[list:3g6b4blv]Miller High Life, the original clear bottle
    Miller Genuine Draft

Non-American
  • German wheat beers, don't recall the names.
Dos Equis amber label, not the green.
    Modelo Especial
    Modelo Negro
    Sol
[/list:u:3g6b4blv]

Carta Blanca, Bohemia, Corona all came from a very sick burro. At least the old Jax beer was honest enough to put a picture of the "brewery" on the label.[/list:u:3g6b4blv]

Sam, while I was drinking the original recipe of Dead Guy Ale, various Trappist ales, thick porters, barleywines and stouts of various foreign and American breweries, Negra Modelo was also a staple in my fridge. As a matter of fact, on the other web site I hang on, one of my favorite people made a crack about Mexican beer.

I jumped up and hit him with Negra Modelo!!! He had to "amend" his previous comment, hee, hee, heee!!!

Two of my favorites that are easy to find are Newcastle and Black Butte Porter.

I forgot about Dos Equis amber, around here at a mexican resturant you can get a 32oz draft for 2.75, goes great with spicey food

Here are a few of my favorites:

Chimay "Cinq Cents" triple ale, Belgian.
Gulden Draak, Belgian
Saint Sebastian's, Belgian
Spaten, German. Comes in Lager, double bock, and in the fall Octoberfest. Label says "Malt Liquor" in small print. I think it's between 6 and 7%.
Dogfish Head XX minute IPA, USA. Very hoppy, full bodied, bitter. Great stuff, not for light beer drinkers.

I dont drink anymore but when I did my beer consumption was usually something high end. Belgian, German and English beers were aways good picks as well as certain American handcrafted stuff. I was pretty fortunate to have the Kalamazoo Brewing Company (now Bells Brewery) in town, that meant some of the best Ales, Porters, and Stouts I have ever drank.

Aubrey, I checked the Bells website and unfortunately they don't distribute in SC. Sorry bud. If you do ever get a chance to sample any, by all means do it.

A few of my old favorites:

Bells Double Cream Stout - USA
Bells Porter - USA
Samuel Smiths Christmas Ale - England
Fullers London Porter - England
Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest - Germany
St Sixtus Abbey Ale - Belgium
Any Chimay beer - Belgium
Spaten - Germany

Probably a hundred more that I can't think of at the moment.

American..
I love Sam Adams......also most of thier varietys

Import

We were in Mexico last Feb., I feel in love with Pacfico...great brew
Always love Guiness, also Magners, a hard apple cider tasting brew popular in Ireland.

Unfortunately it's hard to know what sells in SC that may also sell up here WA. But there are some regional micro brewries that always do me right, no matter what the beer.

Deschutes - makes Black Butte porter & Mirror Pond pale ale year round, the inimitable Cinder Cone red in winter, and Twilight ale in summer

New Belgium - probably most famous for their Fat Tire amber which is a staple around here, but their 1554 black ale and Sunshine summer beer are fantastic as well

Big Sky - their Moose Drool brown ale is my standard when I want a sweeter, maltier taste than my typical amber, and their Summer Honey is one of my all time favorite hot weather beers.

Pyramid - their Hefeweizen is in most bars around here, but it's their Amberweizen that gets me. And their Snow Cap is legendary in these parts as a winter party starter (due in no small part to it's 7% abv)

As for more national flavors, I second Killians as a great inexpensive, but complex and quality refresher. And Negro Modello with a lime does me right as well. Chasing a shot of some high end tequila with a Dos Eqis Amber is another simple pleasure. Or hitting the local Irish pub and getting a Harp lager with a boxty? Heaven.

Cant agree more on this paragraph,

As for the New Belgium, you should also try thier Triple, very nice beer!!!

Great stuff so far, fellas!

Most "regular" beers have had no restrictions. I was mistaken on the previous law: the limit used to be six percent. I do love the suggestions. A few of the suggested beers have already been for sale here prior to the repeal of the law. Even so, y'all have mentioned beers I haven't even thought about for a while and I look forward to trying again. Plus, there's quite a few beers I've never even heard of that I will be keeping an eye out for. Keep the suggestions coming. Y'all are great!

Look for Bell's on a roadtrip to FLA.
Anything by Dogfish Head, Stone, Rogue breweries. All well crafted large beers.
Anything from one of the 7 Belgium Abbeys. Duvel is great. New Belgium (Fort Collins, CO), Ommegang (Cooperstown) and Unibroue (Canada) make great Belgium style beers.

Support your local microbrewery. Hopefully, the law also applies to them so they can make copies of some of these excellent beers.

OK here are some must tries. All the following are very enjoyable beers:

Smittwicks Ale
Young's Oatmeal Stout
Sam Smiths Oatmeal Stout
Samual Smiths Imperial Stout (MMMM)
Delerium Tremens
Gulden Draak
Boddingtons
Duinen Triple (my all time favorite beer)
Duinen Duuble (also VERRRRRY good)

That should get you a good start and a nice Buzz
