What happened to Young’s Oatmeal Stout?

Back in 2001-2002 I was introduced to it and thought it was outstanding. Even though I am not a beer drinker, it had a great flavor. Then all of a sudden it was no longer available in cans. After the cans could not be found, the bottles disappeared. A few phone calls to regional distributors and I learned that Young’s discontinued the beer. Ugghhh!

Recently I went back online to the Young’s Brewing Company website and learned that they are now merged with Charles Wells and is now Well’s & Young’s Brewing Company. I hope they eventually decide to reintroduce their Oatmeal Stout. It was truly outstanding.

Re: What happened to Young’s Oatmeal Stout?

Yeah Jefe, I think the Young's Oatmeal Stout probably suffered badly in it's head up competitions with Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. While the Young's had a very nice, rather frothy body and unique texture, the Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout has a much more robust flavor. Time after time in the 90's, I would buy a Young's, but kept going back to the Samuel Smith's. Wells and Young is still making their fantastic Double Chocolate Stout, and has recently come out with a banana flavored beer. The guy with the store on the corner encouraged me to mix the two of them, remarking that the brewer had that in mind when making it. I did this and found out it wasn't a bad mix at all. Bananas and chocolate, who could refuse?

I still wouldn't mind them taking a stab at coming back with another try at an oatmeal stout, though. Just put a bit more oatmeal in it, or a higher alcohol content, perhaps.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout was my introduction to real beer, as opposed to headache inducing American pisswater back in 1988. It's still a favorite, had one recently, just as good as ever. Samuel Smith is quite a brewery, a big line of products, nothing bad.
