bourbon, the original "wheated" bourbon.

As much as I love this bourbon's 19 year old brother, this 12 year old version, the original, while a fine product indeed, falls short of The Earl Of Bloofingtonia's taste test expectations.

By the way, the palace of The Earl Of Bloofingtonia is located at 1313 Mockingbird Lane, The Eye Sore of Lower Dutchess County (just ask my neighbors!!!), New York but has no visiting hours. Trespassers will be attacked by the blue jays on my property. Well, would you believe that I'll call the woodchuck from out back and have him come out front and bite your ankle? No? Okay, well, gimme some time, I'll think of something.

HEY BLOOF, WE ALL KNOW YOU LIVE IN THE EYE SORE OF LOWER DUTCHESS COUNTY, NEW YORK AND WE DON'T CARE, WE WANNA HEAR 'BOUT DA BOIBUHN!!!! . . .

Okay, okay, can'taguyhavesomefunwitchyouse???

(Editors Note: For those of you living outside of the Northeastern United States, particularly in the Midwest, the translation of that sentence is:)

Now, now, is it not possible for a gentleman to inspire some mirth in your day, this fine morning?

Well, this fine bourbon, made from a mash bill of corn, barley and red winter wheat indeed has a fine character, smooth and sweet, but my main complaints are that it is one dimensional, too mild and light bodied, and has a short finish, or in other words, little aftertaste. My preferences go mainly to bourbons that have strong, bold flavors, whether it be the vanilla, caramel, honeysuckle type or the oaky, candy apple, cinnamon and smoke type bourbons.

One example of the former is the W.L. Weller Wheated 19 year old bourbon, standing firmly in the No. 4 spot on the Earl Of Bloofingtonia's Top Twenty, and a great example of the latter is Booker's, standing in my No. 3 spot.

I would have loved to have given this bourbon very high marks, but it doesn't make my Top Ten, and I'm not even sure about the Top Twenty. I will say this, it probably makes a great Manhattan, and is a tremendous bargain, because you will not pay more than $18-20 to walk out of your local liquor store with this and you will find it sweet, pleasant and easy drinking.

W.L. Weller "Wheated" 12 year old bourbon. By the way, in case you're wondering what the big deal about "wheated" bourbon is, it's because bourbon is made from a mash bill that is at least 51% corn, and the other, or "small" grains are usually barley and rye. The wheated bourbons are usually sweeter than those made with barley and rye or other small grains in the mash bill.
