Hey guys and girls my fiancée brought up a good question. She is on birth control and they tell her not to smoke cigarettes because it will cause strokes. I was looking to see if there was any research on cigars and birth control. She likes to smoke cigars with me but was worried about the strokes. She has been smoking with for a year or so and no problem now but she only smokes like 1 or 2 cigars a month. Any thoughts on this. Thanks, Craig.

I honestly would not worry about it if she only does it on occasion.
Did you know that Dr's say drinking to much water causes cancer??
Its just a warning they have to put on the bottle.

That warning is for women who smoke more than a pack a day. Smoking one or two cigars a month will have no adverse effects.

Also take into consideration what they don't tell you in that warning...

American cigarette companies have been putting a cocktail of chemicals in their products for years now, and it might not necassarily be the nicotine that causes strokes

There are 599 additives approved by the US Government for use in the manufacture of cigarettes as submitted by the five major American cigarette companies to the Dept. of Health and Human Services in April of 1994, this list of ingredients had long been kept a secret

to warn you of that being the risk is to "out" the tobacco companies, even though this list was supplied by them, it's not common knowledge...that would be bad for business, and the people with money won't let that happen, so those types of warnings are general to say the least.

Well I haven't had a baby yet, so cigars are good birth control.

Cigars AS birth control. Now that would be cool! Although if that were the case, I may in fact be sterile. While that may be good for the human race as a whole, I don't think my wife would approve.

The risk is that within the first few months of any hormone therapy, which is what BC pills are a type of, the blood is more coaguable. This increases the risk of stroke, heart attack, and clots in the deep veins of the legs. To my knowledge there have been zero studies into the effects of occasional cigar smoking and increased risk of clotting events, and since there have been no linkage of atherosclerosis to occasional cigar smoking, I doubt that there is a link to BC pills.

Thanks guys for the replies. Yeah, and she usually gets upset if I don't wait for her when I smoke so she can have one to. That is some long list of chemicals from thoes cigaretts.

Adverse health effects from cigar smoking are drastically reduced by:
1) Not inhaling the smoke - that is, not deliberately and repeatedly drawing on the cigar then drawing the smoke directly into the lungs as you would with a cigarette. Smelling/tasting the smoke is the whole enjoyment of a cigar, but no matter how careful you are some will be inhaled. Nicotine is also absorbed in the nasal passages and mouth.
2) Limiting your cigars to no more than one a day, with no relighting.
3) Not keeping the cigar in the mouth except to draw smoke from it - no 'chewing' on the tobacco. The end of the cigar should stay nearly dry.
4) By smoking outdoors where you are still breathing clean air between draws. Obviously no smoke will contaminate your indoor space either.

Brenda, your right I think she should, but its just one of thoes questions you come up with and try to remember for when you have to go to the doctor for a check up. So i thought it would be interresting to here your guys's take on the question.
