This mornings Coffee

Today I am cupping some Rwanda Masaka
a rich but smooth coffee!
It has hints of nuts & honey.
This batch I roasted just into second crack.
For those of you that don't home roast the beans go threw 2 steps.
First is when the water leaves the bean & the bean makes a loud cracking sound. Then a few more minutes into the roast the sugers start to crackle, that is known as second crack.
I often roast only to first crack (light roast) My wife likes a darker
roast and for her I will roast into second crack.
Well I hope everyone is enjoying a fine cup of coffee today!

I'm gonna used this thread to post what I brew every morning. That said, this morning I had a Vienna Roast. It was dark and a bit oily bean. It smelled so good when it brewed. It woke me right up (I'm not really a morning person.)


I'm really looking forward to roasting my own. I'm waiting for my first shipment of green coffee beans to come in. I can't wait.

This morning, I went for a Freedom Press of Mocha Java. After that, early this afternoon, I used some left over Mocha Java to make a blend of about 62% Mocha Java, 38% Colombian Supremo. Both beans came roasted from Oren's, and were ground in my Zassenhaus 151 Box grinder, over 14 years old, and about 550 pounds later, still going strong.

Oren's usually roasts what I would call appropriately for the bean. Sometimes it's fairly dark, at other times it's on the darker side of what would still be called a light roast.

I tend to like a medium roast, what SweetMarias.com seems to call "city roast". Is this a common term, or one they have coined on their site?
<--- still very new to "fine" coffee! :oops:

and is it hard to roast to just past first crack? also what would be the best roaster for someone starting out?

Started the morning with Costa Rican Tarrazu compliments for Capt! What a great tasting and smooth roast. Looking foward to brewing another pot to have with a cigar.

Sumatra Mandheling

I brewed up a pot of the Sumatra Mandheling. It was really nice to have a cup after work. Wow! I'm gonna look into getting some of these beans raw (for when I get a new roaster.)

I went ahead and used the French Press. I like to make my brew strong then, add hot water if needed. It was perfect. I used two tablespoons of beans per 6 ounces. I use a blade grinder and buzzed it for about 15 seconds. It had a beautiful aroma. I added the hot water and stirred with a wooden chop stick then, let it sit for five minutes, exactly. I slowly pressed the plunger down then, poured the coffee into two thermos'. It was a strong, full bodied coffee with a rich aroma. I could see a tiny bit of the natural oils from the coffee that made a beautiful caramel swirl resting on the top of my cup. It was a smokey brew with complex flavors. I look forward to brewing another pot. Thanks, Kelvin!

I brewed up a pot of Capt's Costa Rican Tarrazu - wonderful aroma and nice dark color - glad we sent enough for at least two pots

La Minita Tarrazu and Sumatran Mandheling, two of my all-time favorites, with the La Minita probably being No. 3 on my favorites list, but No. 1 if you asked me what perfect coffee is. Getting ready to go upstairs and brew a Freedom Press of La Minita as we speak, as a matter of fact.

I bought four pounds of various types of Kona (including peaberry), and started drinking it this morning. Roasted last night before bed, let the beans sit overnight, and ground them up after waking up. Not bad coffee, but I have to say, I still prefer the Yirgacheffe, which has become the standard against which I measure all coffees 8)

I brewed up a single cup of New Guinea Fair Trade. It's a little weaker than I normally make it but, still drinkable. I'll need to use more beans for the next time.

About halfway through a delicious Freedom Press of La Minita as we speak. The sun is shining, it's closing in on 50 degrees, WHERE'S WINTER?!?!?!?! Oh well, it's still a beautiful day to be alive and in Dutchess County, up on a hill, . . .

with the hippo cat beside me on the couch, . . .

squirrels and birds rummaging around outside, . . .

Praise The Lord, and hello to everyone at AmBack. There's just no better way to start the day for me than a nice, piping hot Freedom Press of pure black coffee, with just a tiny touch of unheated, unfiltered upstate Noo Yawk honey stirred into each mug's worth. :D

I brewed a pot of the Costa Rican Tarrazu. It had a nice aroma that filled the kitchen. The Costa Rican was a mild brew with hints of nut (to me, at least.) I drank it black and also had a couple of sips of it with cream. The cream brought out more of the flavor (which I thought was strange.) I look forward to another pot. I'll brew the next pot a bit stronger (more beans, less coffee.)

How funny Brenda, I brewed a pot of the New Guinea this morning.

I haven't been sleeping well lately, got alot going on here. I woke up early this morning (5am) and couldn't fall back asleep. Coffee was programed to brew at 530, so I cancelled the auto brew and started brewing. Since it was going to be awhile before the coffee was done, I jumped into the tanning bed for about 12 minutes. Ah!! What a way to wake up. When I was finished tanning, I sterilized the bed and headed out to the kitchen for my coffee. Poured a cup and looked for something to watch on TV. Nothing on, so I finished my coffee and headed to the firehouse early.... Of course, I took my thermos full of that wonderful coffee from Brenda!!

So, Capt....do you wear one of those thongs when you tan? :shock: :p .......

Since I have not been sleeping altely, I have been following the same ritual. Get up at 5, jump in the tanning bed, and drink almost a whole pot of coffee. This morning I made a basic 8 O'clock, original roast. I tell you what, for 12 bucks for over a pound, you can't go wrong. I love this coffee. Maybe in the next pass, I will include some in each box so those who haven't had it, can try it. I have been laying off the cigars lately, not smoking at all. Kinda miss it, but right now I don't feel like wasting a good cigar since I can't enjoy it...
