Taking care of your humidor

I had questions regarding humidor care. I've seen a lot of products on websites that relate to them, but I'm wondering if they're gimmick products. I know you're supposed to use distilled water for soaking the sponges. Also, do certain steps need to be taken differently regarding different size humidors? The one I'm getting is a 40 box, with the basic round humidifer.

What are the best, easiest, and possibly cheapest ways to keep a humidor in pristine condition. Are any products necessary? Thanks.

Just make sure you follow the written instructions that came with your humidor to prep it properly. There are different schools of thought on whether or not it is wise to wipe down the inside with a damp paper towel. Some say it will warp the wood. Some say it will "condition" the wood to hold humidity better. I have done it both ways, and say to be on the safe side, don't wipe it down. Just leave a shot glass of distilled water in it for about a day or two to bring the humidity level up, and always have a supply of distilled water in the house. Gallons are fairly cheap and last a long time, except during the winter in your neck of the woods. Soak your humidifier, the round thingy, very well to get it going. Submerge it in distilled water, by weighing it down with something but let the holes be exposed to let the water soak in.

By all means, do a hygrometer salt test on your hygrometer, instructions for which can be found here. If your humidor came with an analog hygrometer, chances are it's garbage and should go there, but do the test first. At some point, you'd be well to consider buying a digital. A good one can be had for $20-30 if I'm not mistaken. Keep checking in with us, especially if you have any troubles maintaining proper humidity, whether on the high or low side. You must however, do the salt test before you start, so you know whether or not you are getting correct readings from your hygrometer.

Oh, by the way, that IS the shake from the show I call Burger, Fries, Shake, but which I believe is really called Aqua Teen Hunger Force from the Adult Swim lineup, isn't it?

Bloofington,

Thanks for the advice. Also, yes that is Master Shake from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I have all the DVD volumes out. It's a nitch show, but has great random humor that is hilarious. You may want to rent the volumes from your video store, and kick back with a cigar. Mooninites unite! :D

FX, I don't think that Bloofy smokes the "Cigars" that make that show better to watch.

HAHAHAHA, well...I was trying to relate to the forum a little better, but if we want to be "blunt" about it, then go ahead. :cryinlaugh:

I'm attending the Berklee College of Music. I should graduate next spring. I'm originally from Indiana, about 20 minutes west of Indianapolis.

I have wiped down the inside of one of my humidors. I tried to condition it by setting a small glass of distilled water in it and the humidity level would only rise to about 58%. I did the dollar and light test and the seal was fine. I finally broke down and did the wipe down and now the humidity is right where I want it. Be careful with this technique. I did it only as a last resort.

I use temp/humidity sensors from Oregon Scientific in my humidors. After the salt test they were all with in 1% for humidity and about a half of a degree different for temperature. Now I can see what the temp and humidity is without opening the lid. I got them really cheap because Target had them on clearance.
