whats up guys?
this is my first post here and i thought what better place to get a response to this?
being mired in southern il, i dont really get to hobknob with cigar folk as much as i like, so i end up having to explain every time, "well, it punches a hole in the end of the cigar..."
i just wanna see what everyone thinks of it

Nice work. Nice username, by the way. Aqua Teen Hunger Force may just be the greatest thing man has ever created.

Mastershake eh, how are Frylock and Meatwad? Ha ha, seriously though nice job. How clean of a cut do you get from that? Oh and welcome to the boards. How long have you been smoking cigars?

i've been smoking cigars for about a year
bought my first box of rjs at cigar.com
been studying blacksmithing for three to six years, depending on how you score it

as for the cutting ability, this may get a little technical...
the cutter itself is turned from one piece of damascus, with layers of mild steel and 1095
this was a sacrifice i had to make due to time constraints
idealy i would have removeable stainless cutting heads of different sizes
i dont expect the cutter to stay sharp for very long
but version 2.0 should be done this summer

Welcome! Looks good...how big of a cut does it give?

That is really cool! I'm super impressed! I haven't decided what I like better, cut or a punch. They're both treating me pretty good.
Great work!

Obviously, you have done a very good job. I am trying to get into smithing, knives mostly. Ill PM ya. . .

I am also going to make a punch, but hopefully out of a bullet casing. What size should I be looking for? Is 9mm too big? (Which is a little bit bigger than a 1/3 of an inch) Is their a "norm" for punch dia.?

What dia. is the hole for your punch, Master?

I think a 9mm case would cut a hole a little large, try a .223
should give a nice hole and have room to grip and spin.

if memory serves, it punches a hole 9/32"
no it is not pocket sized, i envision it next to my favorite chair, near the humidor
as for the bullet casing, i would almost go with a .308
it would seem to me that when punching, you would want almost as large an opening as when cutting (if im wrong here, someone let me know
so if i were punching a robusto at a 50 ring gauge, i would be looking for a hole of aroung a 30, which would be about a half inch
thats just what sounds right to me
but blackwater, deffinatly hit me up, always great to meet like minded people

I'd buy or trade some smokes for one of those!

I have a few Damascus blades and LOVE them!

I don't punch cigars to often, so it should stay sharp for a long time!

yea, your prolly right. I didnt want it to be that long bcuase I want to attach it to my keychain, but if thats how it need sot be then thats fine. Thanks for the idea. Im going out to the range sunday, so il try the .223 out.

I think the .308 would relatively equal the cut size of a cutter, but I think I like the smaller hole anyways.

meatwad get the honeys see.... had to get the dvd out last night so im fresh up on my athf. happy time harry is still my favorite of all time.

Blackwater, If you decide you want a .30 cal hole, you might try a .30 carbine. It makes a more compact package. Also, with all the steel case ammo on the market, I was wondering if a steel case would keep an edge longer. They're probably made of such mild steel that it wouldn't make much diff.

i think mild would still hold up longer than brass
also, if you were really into it, you could heat up a steel casing red and quench it
that would give you a little more life
(note: doing the same with brass would soften it)

I didnt get to go to the range :( , but I may go fire off a round into the ground today just to get the cassing  . They do have steel .223. I may go and bribe a unloaded cassing round or two from my local gun shop. I love connections.
