HI all and good day! Just signed up. I wouldn't call myself an avid cigar afficianado but I like to smoke a few here and there--as well as smoke my pipe. I find both to be very relaxing.

OK, I'll throw out one of those obvious newb questions that you have probably heard a billion times (I did a search but couldn't find anything conclusive--atleast not near the top of the results): How do the dominican/honduran made versions (US available) compare to the reknowned US banned versions. Are they even similar in taste, complexity, etc. or should they be considered entirely different cigars (of course Cohiba, Partagas, Hoyo de Monterrey, among others come to mind)? I just see a lot of reference made to "re-introducing" former Cuban brand names but made by various manufacturers in various places and was curious. (Ducks to avoid any hurled items that this question might have evoked :) )

I just smoked a Gurkha perfecto #3 tonight and enjoyed it--very smooth with a moderate complexity and the whole stick burned down to the end without dropping any ash (seemed pretty cool to me). My favorite smokes so far have been Indian Tabac Cameroon Legends, variious different Gurkhas, and Torano Signature torpedos these stood out as very enjoyable to me but I have liked and disliked many others--wanted to like but didn't really enjoy the Hoyo de Monterrey Excaliber Black Knight for example

(Also, any easy way to put the tilda over the n so that Torano is actually spelled correctly btw?)

Fisrt Welcome to our little corner of the cigar world.

To answer your question -
what they have in common is the name.

Many of the cross brands are families that left Cuba as the government took their lands -
They left and started new companies and kept the brand names.
Flavors are different - Cuban soil & climate creates the finest
tobacco in the world (IMHO)
Hope you have fun sharing & learning here!

As in Toraño?

It is easy, and requires only a modest familarity with ASCII code: hold down the ALT key and stroke "0 2 4 1" on the numeric keypad at the same time, not do-able if you only have a laptop.

welcome slow burn
I am also a newbie and find the people here very friendly and informative.

I been following the PIF's and a little reluctant to join in yet (affraid I might have bad tastes in smokes,,,lol) but they are fun to follow!!

Joe:

I was the same way when I first started - no better way to get your feet wet than the PIF - or check out the trades thread a few pages back. Someone is always up for a trade!

Welcome jlipcovichich and slow burn!

Thanks guys n gals and well met! Gotta go to work but I'm looking forward to coming home and enjoying a cool evening (early morning actually) with a Dominican Cohiba and some Gentleman Jack out back. The Dom. Cohiba isn't my fav. but it IS the smoothest cigar I think I have ever smoked--I get them at work for a good deal and like to smoke one every now and again to see if I can ever discover what the hoopla and price is all about (so far. . .nothing :D ).

Brenda, thanks, I thought that was the coolest album liner pic ever and Tom Waits is great relaxing-with-a-smoke-and-a-drink-music!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to everyone in the States--and have a good weekend to everyone else as well!
