Cold brewing-anyone ever tried it?

Heart of the Quagmire
A few years ago I heard about a coffee preparation technique called Cold Brewing. My limited understanding of it was that ground coffee was "steeped" overnight, and then heated by the cup when you wanted some. The idea was that the aromatic oils and other easily sublimated tastes would not be driven off by heating, and more flavor was retained. It sounded interesting, but I can't find any references.

Anyone?

Some friends of ours use that method for their coffee. They brew it well ahead of time, every two weeks or so. They then just add some milk, cream, and/or water and throw it in the microwave. I liked the lower acid content, but the flavor was...weird. Caveat: I like the richer taste the oils give my coffee, so I use a French Press.

I'm enjoying my morning, pre-Rush Freedom Press of Colombian Supremo as we speak.

I have had a pot or 2 of the cold brewed using the Freedom Press pot, same amount of coffee & same amount of water, just let it sit over night , in the morning Press pour & heat in the micro wave for Hot coffee, tastes a little different than brewed, but when I think about it I do make it the night before, , I have only used a light roast coffee so far , I will be using a full rich dark roast the next time .
