Armpit of the world....Al Asad, Iraq
I'm back from Kansas City. That place sucks!
Training was slow, unproductive and a total waste of time IMO.
Sometimes I think that all of these seminars and training classes they have are only for the old salt dogs to get together, bitch and drink beer. I missed my family, I missed my unit.

Now I'm back in California, getting ready to go to Hawaii for 5 days to unwind with the family before I head back to Iraq.

My ship date is set for March 26. I'll be out there until June.

I did get some good news, however, while in Kansas City. I found out that I'll be getting stationed in Hawaii come Aug 4th!
My wife is from there, so it'll be good to bring her home for a few years. I don't think I'll mind living in paradise for a while!

My only fear is shipping my cigars out there. How does one transport 400 cigars SAFELY? I though about a big cooler with some humi packs in it. Over night it the day before I fly out.

Off to Hawaii? Sweet!

I guess I'd definately ship them. Airlines seem more likely to lose them than FedEx, UPS, etc., and they won't pay squat if they lose them.

Maybe cherry pick a few of your best/most precious/most expensive sticks to put in your carry-on if you can. I'd probably fill up my (15 count) cigar caddy with Opus X, Perdomo Silvio, and whatever other expensive/rare stuff will fit and carry the thing on.

Awesome! If you need any practice shipping them, I'll be your guinea pig. Send them out here and I'll randomly select a few and see if they smoke properly!

I just did a quick quote on fedex.com for a cooler 24X21X20 @ 40 lbs. Overnite form Camp Pendleton to Honolulu is about $200.
Not sure how you would secure the cooler so it did not get 'accidentally' opened. Why not pack them all in a box that will fit in a duffle bag as a carry on? I would be wary of using UPS / FedEx for that.

DD, if your wife still has family in Hawaii (same island where you'll be stationed), why not ship it to them about a week before you move there?

My parents have shipped care packages to me via cargo (Hawaiian Airlines) and it sucks! NEVER use an airline cargo for transport! Same reason why you'd never take the cooler as a check-in.

Using USPS Standard never had any hiccups. Packages get there (from California) in 2-3 days. From Hawaii, it's no more than 2 days. How do you think I get my lau lau and kalua pork? :D

If no relatives in Hawaii, I can see if my parents (on Oahu) can receive your cooler and hold on to it until you arrive.

Thanks for checking on that for me, brother.
Sounds about what I was looking at as well.

Mmmmm.....kalua pork and lau lau.....I'll be eating plenty of that this weekend!

Thanks for the offer but my wife's family is there. I'll be sending it to them the day before I leave. I can't really trust that they'll take care of what I send as well as I would like them to.
