Question about Maduro wrappers

What should I be expecting from a maduro stick? I have smoked two now, and have been underwhelmed. The first was a cuesta rey #9 that started sweet, but had little in the way of flavor or strength. It was a little overhumidified, so I chalked the lack of flavor to that.

My second was an Anejo #55 that burned perfect, had great thick white smoke, but no flavor other than an initial sweetness. Is this normal, or am I expecting too much power from these things. I have heard how the maduro gives a sweetness to the taste of a cigar, but is it just the blends that these two sticks have? Don't get me wrong, they were both very enjoyable to smoke, but I guess I was expecting to be knocked on my arse like I was the first time I smoked an Opus X.

Any advice or help is much appreciated.

I don't know Cutter, I smoke almost all maduros now, I find the regular wrappers to be quite bland. What I would suggest is to try a Brazilia, or maybe an LGC Maduro - either one of those should give you LOTS of spice and flavor.

There you go brother!

Maduro is more typically used on fuller cigars but is not indicative of body. It usually imparts spice and/or sweetness. For a real powerhouse, go to the Comacho Diploma corojo or Oliva El Cobre.

Personally I don't think the wrapper adds that much flavor to any cigar.
Look at how much leaf is used on the wrapper and then the rest of the cigar. Maduro wrappers are sweeter to taste - they have suger in them.
The sugar is something thing that happens from heating the leaves.
It is tsated on the wrapper not in the smoke.
I always like Maduro but find myself reaching for them less and less.
I do think many Maduro wrappers are a little thicker than natural leaves - maybe it helps in the curing to have a thicker leaf - ?
Either way I would not give a wrapper 10% of the cigars flavor maybe 4 or 5% at best

surf through C.com, CI.com, and JRcigars.com. They all have "cigar school" or cigar 101, sections. The term Maduro means a lot of different things. My favorite is the Onyx Mini-belicos. It IS a "Maduro" but its really an Oscuro wrapper. Depending on what each maker defines Maduro as, what process they use, and what countries the wrapper, filler, and binder comes from, will dictate the taste and flavor of the cigar. The RyJ Anniv. is a great Maduro. I'll see if I can find youy some info.

The two cigars you chose are not known for their strength. You are not going to get a strong or weak cigar just because it's maduro. If you want a strong Maduro, ask your local retailer for just that.
I like a ton of maduro cigars, both strong and not so strong. It's the blend that drives the strength. There are some real pussy cats rolled with a maduro. Dark=strong is a common myth.

I had kelp my mouth shut because I agreed with Castle, but tonight I smoked a geat cigar down to the last inch. The wrapper started to come undone so I figured I'd test this out. I found the cigar has a total different taste with no wrapper. It lost it's spicy twang and took on a much earthier taste. I would have disliked the cigar if it had that taste the whole way through....

I have read many articals that state that the wrapper accounts for 50% to 60% of the flavor....but it is a highly debatable subject

I agree, maduro doesn't mean it's going to throw you for a loop, and certainly not the way an Opus would. My favorite is the RyJ maduro, I've found it to be really chocolatey and smooth. Another I would recommend is the CAO MX2. The color of the wrapper is almost black and that can be a bit intimidating. I know I was! But it's super smooth and will really mellow you out. Looks like you've got a lot of info to sift through! Have fun!
