So I get off of work early today, and I really want a bottle of scotch and a bottle of bourbon. I look through old threads and see some great suggestions from Vince and Bloof. The first liquor store I get to is closed--odd on a Tuesday, but oh well. Then I drive to the second one...closed due to election day!!! :x :? Is this just a backwards South Carolina thing or what?!? Ok, rant over.

I have to say that if they were actually out voteing or working the poles than good, it is always good to see that people actually take it serious and get involved, and if they were not than same on them for taking advantage of the oppertunity.

It wasn't their choice to close the store - it's a South Carolina state law that all liquor stores are closed on election day. At least in Charleston, it's true.

Really? Why is that?

I think it has something to do with not being able to buy people's votes with alcohol, or to ensure that people vote sober (and yet you can still buy beer and wine). It's the same reason you can't buy liquor on Sundays here. Just laws that have stayed on the books long past their useful lifespan.

So, they are assuming that people don't already have booze, wine or beer in the house on election day, and just because it's election day, before people run to the polls, they're going to wake up and say, . . .

"Oh no, election day, we're out of bourbon, I've gotta run down to Chauncey's for a bottle of Knob Creek before I head over to vote."

When was that law written, 1831?

So apparently, we're one of 9 states that have this sort of ban on election day. Luckily, we can get beer and wine at grocery stores and such, so we're not completely SOL. Here's what I learned about that:

"State law requires that liquor stores close on Sunday, except as authorized by law, during statewide general and run-off elections, and during periods proclaimed by the Governor in the interest of law and order or public morals and decorum."

I also learned in my research that we are the only state in the union that bans the sale of LOTTERY TICKETS on election day. It is the only day of the year where you can't buy them here. Of course, the reason for the law is not on the books.

Geez, I thunk Taxachusetts was bad.

On the bright side, if voting really worked, it would be illegal.
