horse the other day. Actually, it was just after cashing my check on Thursday, when I felt the lure of the nice American Whiskey window display at Park Avenue Wines and Liquors on Madison Avenue in NYC. Oh, and as for that PARK Avenue Wines and Liquors being on MADISON Avenue, . . .

don't ask, don't tell. :D :D :D

Anyway, there I was with enough extra dollars in my pocket (when is there ever REALLY enough extra dollars???), and as I said I used the lure and the justification to walk out of the store the proud and eagerly anticipatory owner of, . . .

DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!

Hold the cream cheese and gimme the butter on that roll, by the way, . . .

The Classic Cask Single Batch Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, 21 years old, 90 proof, bottle #421/650, Distilled 1981, Bottled 2003. Total cost with tax, $76.05.

I first spied this fine whiskey wandering through alcoholreviews.com recently on their annual 25% off sale, which I didn't purchase from, but they have the best selection and are known for giving great comments and reviews. I noted the name of this intriguing whiskey.

21 years old. Hey, you got my interest just by saying that!!! Straight Rye Whiskey. Hmmmmmmmmm, I've got to look into that a bit more. I think that means that the mash bill is ALL rye, which is another intriguing factor in my consideration of it.

My first taste test showed an amazing character, the full bodied spiciness of the Van Winkle Family Reserve 13 year old rye, and the sweet, light bodied candy like flavor of the Sazerac 18. More as the resulting taste tests proceed.

It's beginning to look like that just as my Top Ten of Bourbon is evolving into a college football-like Top 25, I may have to enact a Top Ten rye list if this keeps up. With Sam's Warehouse sale on until the 29th at samswine.com, I'm eyeing at least one of the Old Potrero rye products.
