Hello, I just joined today. I have a post in the welcome new members forum.

What are the cigars called that are only about 3-4 inches long and really thin. Also do they make all cigars in this size also. Like if i wanted to try different brands of cigars but didn't want to pay for the whole one, could I buy them in smaller sizes?

Also, I keep hearing nothing but raves and rants about cubans. In my short duration of my new found hobby iv'e read many times to ditch everything but cubans. Arnt' cubans illegal in the US? What makes cubans so godly awesome?

Thankyou for all your help,
Matt

You are probably describing Coronas or Petite Coronas. If they are short and fat the are probably Robustos.

short and very thin, little bigger than a cigarette? those are just really small cigars, most ive had have no flavor and are a waste of time. a lot of cubans are very good, but you can have non cubans that are just as good as a lot of cubans too. yes cubans are illeagle in the states but there are plenty of ways around that for the keen individual that wants them. illeagal or not you can get anything in this country if you try. ive only had the pleasure of trying one cuban thanks to one very generous individual on this board who shall remain nameless, and i must say it was very good, it had a distinct flavoring difference than non cubans, maybe it was all in my head. but for a beginer such as yourself, stick to non cubans. its cheaper and you will find many many many sticks out there you will still enjoy immensly. to all those that say cubans are the best, anything else is garbage, they probly never had a real cuban anyway.

Almost no cigar comes close to the unique, distinct, and bold flavor of even a smooth, mild Cuban cigar. The ones that come close are few and far between. Most cigar brands also come in the very small size you mentioned, like 4x38 size, if you're looking through a catalog or on a web site. They're not necessarily that bad, depending on the brand, but the manufacturer can't get as many leaves in one of those as they can in a short, fat one, like a robusto, or a long, fat one, like a Churchill.

Many times, interestingly enough, it is a small sized cigar that has the most distinct flavor of a certain brand, but only down to about a 44 ring. Anything less, and it's really hard to get the whole "blend" in there. The larger "ring gauge" cigars, despite having way more tobacco due to the extra thickness, are sometimes milder because of the extra air getting in with each puff.

If you're looking for top flavor in a small cigar, try going no smaller than a 44-46 ring. If you stick with 4-5 inch cigars, they won't take too long to smoke, or bust your budget.

its sad, but that is true....

there are a few exceptions to the rule though.

Do a search on the forum here to find a bunch of info on the different sizes and manufacturers that some of us believe to be close to cuban flavor. In reality, you may not even appreciate a good cuban cigar if you are new to the whole cigar smoking hobby. The reason is, you have little to compare it to in your own mind right now, so, smoking a great Monte #2 from Cuba, may compare very similarly for you to a inexpensive domestic you have recently smoked. This is very simply explained as an untrained pallate. Through smoking many different kinds of cigars, you begin to understand what some of us are talking about in regards to complexity, and a smoke changing throughout the smoking process, and all the different things that we all enjoy while sending our tobacco treats to a firey death!

This is the plight of every new hobbyist, and through interest, research, and of course smoking cigars, you too will begin to experience a whole new world of cigar smoking.

Hope that helps a little, DO NOT SPEND ALLOT OF MONEY ON A CIGAR THAT EVERYONE RANTS ABOUT JUST TO BUY IT. Start small, then move your way up, find what strength you enjoy, and stick to it.

My fingers hurt...Sorry for the length. Welcome to the Madness!!!!!!
