All dried out

So I opened up my humidor to grab something to smoke tonight, and I discovered that my sticks are all dried out. My hygrometer is sitting at about 63% - 65% and the temp is usually around 76-78, so I dunno what the problem is. I've been using a water pillow for my humidification, and I guess they wear out, because I just refilled the thing a week ago and it's already getting low again. I dunno if the seal on my humi is broken or what, but I'm definitely not happy right now. :argh: :censored:

HELP ME!!! :help:

Aside from the dry sticks, are you using a digital or analog hygro? As for the humidification unit, try the Boveda packets as they are engineered to maintain a constant humidity.

axe, I'm using an analog hygro.

I know, I know, get a digital one, but money's really tight with me right now. I only have 8 sticks because of the money thing, but I guess that's a mixed blessing. I'm glad I didn't have more sticks to ruin.

im not sure if the water pillows can be used more than once, that may be the problem. might have to go get a gallon of distilled water.

Well, be thankful that Axe is here to save the day. Within the next week you'll receive a digital in the mail to make monitoring humidity a little easier. :) Just make sure you go out and get a Boveda pack.

Axe is my hero :)

I'm planning to hit the smokeshop tomorrow or Friday, so I'll see about those Boveda packs while I'm there.

the water pillows that come in cigar.com orders should be reusable, the instructions say on them just soak them in water to recharge them.

Axe beat me to the punch wolfy! He truely is a god! Get yourself squared away with your humidification and you should be good to go. Did you do the salt calibration test with your analog? Need to calibrate the new digital as well, it is an absolute must to make sure you know how the hygrometer is reading and if it is off you'll know how to read the + or -.

Enjoy,
Paul

Wolf, Been there, done that! My analog was off by 22+ % to the high side. Digital is it!
I was working to get water out when I should have been putting it in.
All fixed now, took a month to do it!

Yes digital :D

The water pillow is to small to humidify an entire humidor. You would need several of them in there to get the job done or a really big one. My vote has always been for cigar oasis

I like the oasis for larger humidors/cabinets...but I find they take up a lot of room!

Digital...soon they won't even sell humidors with analog...wouldn't that be nice?

what is analog???

I don't use any myself - well sort of!
My big cabinet has a set & forget so I set it and forget it!
I can taste when my smokes are on and know if they are moist or dry
it takes a little time, my mini has a bowl of beads and every now and again I add water. I can tell the water is low because they change colors. Never had a problem since using climax beads.

The oasis is a nice thing as well!
I've used them in the past and was very happy - but I still used the beads. just to make sure the RH never gets to high.
laely I been filling my travel humidor and just smoking what ever is in it. I smoke a lot when I am in my car.
I never use anything in my traveldor - it is very air tight and a week or so my cigars are fine, adding a stick every now and again will bring up the rh.
With the heat keeping them a little dry helps as the cigars in the box can get can become to moist in the heat.

Analogs are absolute junk!!!!!!! Just got ride of mine. Bought a digital for $20.....sleep much better!

I had a analog built into the face of a cabinet - I pulled it out and placed a picture from a RyJ box inside it and put it back in!
Never works so good as it does now!

IMHO - analogs are worthless - you can salt test them every week and they will change - POS throw them away and go digital or nothing!
learn to feel a cigar and know if it is ready!
Takes time, but it will happen!

I haven't bothered to do the salt test with my analog, but I definitely will with the digital one Axe sent to me. The water pillows worked great for me for a while, but not anymore. I have a small 20-25 stick humi.
I went down to the smokeshop on thursday and picked up a Humidi-Pak. Similar concept as the Boveda packs I think? We'll see. It seems to be working fine, but my hygro is reading below 60% now, so I'm pretty sure it's off.
We'll see how well it does when that digital hygro arrives.
Thanks for your help, gentlemen. :D

that bags wrk well for the short term.
They dry out fast if you go in and out of the bag often.
I look into another solution as time passes.
