Are my cigars ruined?

Hi all, I thought I'd move this out of the "Introduce yourself" thread.

Basically, my desk humidor has been around 73% RH. Because:

a) I didn't know any better

-and

b) I wasn't aware that it could be controlled.

So, my question is, can they be saved? I ordered some 65% beads, and I'm hoping that they'll recover on their own.

Luckily, I only have about 25, but that's a big investment for me!

Thanks in advance.

Oh you bet! They will be fine. Take your time with them but really your hygrometer is probably off by a couple anyway, I would worry more about the temp. Welcome to the forum!! :D

I've heard some say thats where they should be at, though I like mine in the mid 60's.

As long as everything feels and looks fine I wouldnt worry (once the foot on a couple cigars split when the humidity got too high in my humi). It will even out.

Welcome!

What they said. Too dry is more of a problem than too wet. Cigars will dry out just fine.

And 73 isn't really high at all. Its higher than my prefered 63% but not terrible.

Double D, it also depends on how long the cigars have been at that humidity.

Though it is not the end of the world, ad your sticks are more then likely fine, beeing too "wet" can lead to the leaves of the cigar to swell causing cracking, usually around the foot of the cigar.

If you have some 65 beads coming you are in great shape, it takes time for cigars to adapt to new RH, so, that helps too. As it has been mentioned already, 73% is not horrible, just tends to be much too wet for my stuff.

Good luck, and no worries about losing your stock!

MAN!

You guys ALL blew it! :argh:

I thought we had this all settled....When a new member of the board asks the inevitable question "are my cigars ruined, because..."
THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS "YES"! :duh:

And then PM your addy to him so you can "dispose" of them properly for him.... :sm_angel:

Where is Big Paintbrush when you freakin' need him :fire: :dunno:

As long as you stay over 60 and under 80 you should be fine. After that you get into mold and oil problems. I actually keep some of my cigars at 75 intentionally becuase I think they smoke better. Others I keep at 63. It is all about trial and error and preference. If you are wanting to age, I suggest keeping it below 70 though. 67 is great but some aficionados in the UK go closer to 60 for thier aging.

double D, I have hydrometers that have a remote sensor. It's great because you don't have to open your humi to check the levels. Radio Shack carries a brand you might want to check out.

Thanks all for the help, and thanks for taking it easy on me (I'm quite guallable  ).

Anyway, I smoked an Oliva "O" Classic today, that had been in there for a week or so, and it burned perfectly I'm happy to say!.

I have actually. Just one though, I made need to give it another chance. It could have been just me, maybe it just didn't fit my mood that day perhaps? Just seemed a little "harsh" for lack of a better term. But I'll give it another try for sure.

I can't seem to get my humdity down. I bought some 65% beads from Heartfealt Industries, put them in, but still 73%. I have a desktop humi 50 capacity with about 25 cigars in it. The temp is steady at 68-69 degrees.

Any advice? Should I just leave the beads out for a while? Leave the lid open? Is it that my cigars are too wet?

Thanks

The best remedy is to call up one of the great folks at cigar.com and order 10-20 more cigars. That should help steady the humidity. :D

That's what I'm going through now, in this hot and humid weather we've been having in Southern Cali. I threw in some untreated dry beads (exquisicat) to help lower the pH, using a GoF coffin to hold them in. Works like a charm.

Thanks Doc-T. I think I'll just chill. Its just my OCD kicking in :(

I'm like that dude from the movie "Pi", except I've become obsessed with 65% since I've joined this forum!

Under normal conditions, my humi maintains 68/68.

But this weather is taking a beating on my humidors. Outside temps are 90+, indoor temp is 85+. My humi's are sweating. I've placed my humi's in one of those disposable styrofoam coolers, vac-sealed a bag of distilled water and froze it, and have it in the cooler. Temps are holding at 70-75degF, and pH is now at 70-72%. I have an extra container of beads (exquisicat) sitting in the cooler as well, to soak up any condensation.

I've even gone as far as installing heat/sun-reflecting film on my window.

It's a tough battle. My wife is ready to throw out my cigars because of my crazyness in all this.
