Arnold's Tobacconists, long a mainstay in the New York City cigar and pipe smoking community, recently closed it's doors for good after 30 years on Madison Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets. The business started 90 years ago and for many years was on the street I used to work out on, just down the block from the gym, on 49th Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenues.

Arnold's was always noted for having fantastic selection and friendly, very knowledgeable staff, even if a bit pricey on cigars. They usually had Opus X when nobody else around did. About a month or more ago, I noticed a massive sale going on with prices slashed, and I knew that whatever the reason, it meant the end was near. The building and many shops are undergoing a refacing and renovation process, and a sign in the window recently said that they lost their lease and are now operating out of their Lawn Guyland web site at http://www.arnoldstobacco.com.

It's good to know they're still around, but their shop will be missed for sure. They are another casualty of the general renovation and construction that is going on in the area of Grand Central Terminal. Unfortunately, I was not able to take advantage of the sales going on. They always had Ashton Virgin Sun Grown when no one did as well.

Oh well.

every privately owned cigar shop i have talked to said they just cant compete anymore, there are only cigar shop chains around here anymore. they only stay in business cause they sell stupid things that potheads and teens buy too. and they sell loose cigarettes lol.
