You know sometimes I smoke a cigar and cant place what I am tasting. Therefore I have been keeping a list of comon flavors or aromas on hand so that I can look it over when I feel like my palate is playing ticks on me. I thought it would be interesting to add my list here so that other people can add common aroma discriptions to help me increase my cigar vocabulary. Here is what I have so far:

Sweet, salty, sour, bitter, earthy, flinty, grassy, burnt, cinnomon, vanilla, butterscotch, woody, rich, poor, coffee, caramel, cocoa, garlic, pepper, honey, licorice, musk, pine, truffle, spice, cajun, pepper, cheewy, bark, hazel, nuts

I once did a review on a Macanudo Robust Churchill during my days at "another web site." The primary flavor was "circa 1970 NYC elementary school mop water."

Let's just say that when you breathed enough of it in, you could pretty much figure out what it tasted like.

tobacco is a good one...
LOL

sorry, bloof can't be the only smart ass around here....

actually, oddly enough, I agree with those tasting notes Bloof!! :D

Gentlemen:
My friend Cian described in an earlier post what this topic is really about. His comment was " He accused me of being a Cuban roller in a past life"
He was right on track. Think like the maker or roller. How does he judge his own work. He rolls one for himself and smokes his daily roll during the day. We also have seen the blender spread a leaf- hold a match under it and smell the smoke.
You must identify how you get to those flavors. By taste( lips or tongue or throat) or by smell.
There is a difference.
My key is the pre-smoke. All through the mouth. If it is good in pre-smoke then I rate it per the smoke taste- mouth only.
Nose does not count.
I've smelled bucket wash water but never tasted it.NO GOOG>

I really like to taste through my nose and in the sinuses, although it is hard to handle some cigars.....

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Any thing resembling a smooth dark chocolate flavor and/ or aroma has got my stamp of approval! Although I have had the dubious pleasure of enjoying cigars that reminded me of muddy blackened boot leather.

cobs, have you tried the cao l'anniversaire maduro? you would probly like it.

Cobsgirl:
I can associate with dark chocolate. Please tell us some of your favorites and their size.
Thanks

Actually, I'm really starting to get into maduros as a whole. I've really been leaning that way when I purchase new cigars. They're really smooth and have lots of character. THe smell is just awesome. I generally shoot for the robustos, not too big, not too small although a corona is good for a short smoke when I don't want to be up late or don't have much time. Some variety packs I've gotten deals on came with a bunch of different sizes and I tend to weed out the robustos first. I'm pretty sure I have a CAO L'Aniversaire maduro somewhere now that I think of it! I'll have to try it! I really like the La Aurora 100 Anos. I picked my first one of those up at a Davidoff store in Vegas for my boyfriend and it is still one of the best cigars I've ever had. I have this bad habit of buying more cigars than I smoke. I'll talk about them with my boyfriend and discuss brands we're curious about and then I go crazy and buy more than I need. It's probably one of the most fun hobbies I've ever had, next to shooting and climbing.

Fun hobby indeed, and you can never buy more cigars than you need. Some will just be aging indefinitely. :cryinlaugh:  :duh: :cryinlaugh:

cobsgirl:

I've been doing a little project hear at work dealing with the infusion of cigars. I took a humidor, 5 Fuente Chateau fuentes, 5 padron 2000 mady's, a bunch of Aurora cigarillos, 4 Gurkha regents, 5 mac hyde parks and a Griffen XX; I took a cigar oasis plus and filled it with Godiva liqueur. After letting the cigars sit out for about 4 weeks to "dry" I put them in the humidor and plugged in the oasis. It's been five weeks now and I have yet to try one....
sounds like something you would be interested in though...

Cigar,
I would absolutely be interested! That is something I've never even thought of doing before but it makes sense. You'll have to let me know if they turned out! What an interesting idea! I wasn't going to have a cigar until tonight but I don't think I can wait now!
THey've got this great drink at Starbucks, it's called Chantico and it's billed as a drinking chocolate. I have been thinking about having a nice cigar and some of that for a while. Pretty much all it is is steamed dark chocolate. Very full of calories but worth every one!
