So Last night I was sitting outside at Carmines restaurant on Rush street...my girlfriend and I ordered some Calamari, and a bottle of red wine. Since they are cigar friendly, I lit up a PSD #4, as usual it smoked great. Eventually my girlfriend took it over so I was left with an Opus RDC, when I lit it, immediately it turned bitter. It was amazing, I kept clipping the foot to see if that would help, but nothing, it almost felt like a tar build up because when I licked my lips it tasted like I would imagine a bitter ashtray to taste like...it was horrible and the smoking experience never got better.

From now on, I won't smoke any Cubans before an Opus.... :?

Although supposedly the best non cuban cigar out there, Opus has some issues. If you fired that puppy up fresh, there's your answer. Opus should be sold with some kind of disclaimer, advise, whatever.

Sure, a fine cigar, IF you let it sit undisturbed and aging at least two years.

I've never had a fresh one that was good. I have a few that are 8+ years old, and make you wanna wake the neighbors and give the dog a beer they're so good.

My local place always has them at MSRP, which is a lot less $$$ than I can find anywhere on-line, so I'm always stocking up.

Yeah, I've only had this one sitting for about a year now...First one to come up bitter like that...I was only able to muscle down half of it before I gave it up...the bad flavor just never went away...

I have noticed something about some cigars recently, mainly really dark wrappered cigars. Examples would the AF Anejo, AF Hemingway Maduro, and 5 Vegas Limited. When I smoked these I notice a black sticky tar like substance that comes out of the end in my mouth. It has happened on every Anejo I have smoked. If I am careful to keep the tip very dry then I don't have many issues. You may be experiencing the same thing here. Try dabbing at the tip with a napkin and see if a dark brown substance comes off of it. If so, you can just dab it all off and continue smoking without a problem as long as you keep the tip dry.

I kept clipping the end off, it was in the flavor of the smoke as well...Immediately after I clipped the end, it would be just as bitter as before...just got a bad apple i guess.

ya know, I've had a few sticks go bad about an inch down, always wondered why, they'd start out real good and then wham...instant $$it, than you feel dumb for smokin the thing down a few more inches to see if it cleans up.

Just like any other stick though...You are dealing with an organic substance...Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's not. I'm with colonel on that there are some Opus that make you wanna hock your first born to get another, and there are some that you experienced that you wouldn't give your best friends dog to smoke.

Tis the way of the world I suppose!

That WAS pretty nasty dude. I'm just glad both 46's weren't like that

I think it must have to do with the fact that I generally get the end of the cigar pretty wet and that is what starts it because it has happened on all 4 Anejos I have smoked recently. And the day that we both had one out of the same batch, your's was fine. I am pretty sure it is because I tend to always mess with the tip of the cigar with my tongue while it is in my mouth... (why do I feel like I am describing how to give a good blowjob?)

Maybe because my second favorite team has been giving you a hosing this season??? What a way to lose last week. They're giving my Jets a run for the money in "ugly" this year. Let's hope this week we get something different. That's from your Raiders, because my Jets will give us more of the same, which is another loss. As for my No. 2A team, the Cowboys, forget it, they're just as ugly.

Oh, and about chomping cigars, don't do it. Getting a cigar wet and chomping on it will cause tars to build up in whatever opening is left, because you are ruining the draw. As for the Anejos, the wrappers are stored in cognac barrels, so they have a little something extra in there, too.

In regards to the bitter Opus, I think the colonel nailed it, they need humi-time. Although I tend to keep them on hand, I rarely smoke them, when I do pull one out they are pretty damn good. I've yet to have a bad one.

Oh no, I don't chomp it. It just tends to get a bit wet. I don't actually chew it all up.
