Hey all, I was just wondering if any of you expierenced smokers out there would be willing to share your memories and experiences that you had during this "cigar boom" that happened in the mid-90's that I keep hearing about. In 96' I was only 20 and I really can't remember hearing anything about cigars suddenly becoming popular all of a sudden. Did this cigar boom get any of you into cigars? What were the prices of cigars then compared to now? Thanks everyone for sharing their experiences during this time.

I am sure Bloof will post a FULL page to anser this question. All I know is alot of nasty cigars and tobacco came with the boom. With everyone in a rush to get products out, they forgot about one thing.....quality. And don't even get me started with the yuppie cigars smokers. Yuppies+cigars= Macanudo.

I know a lot of people who during that time wanted to quit smoking cigarettes and turned toward cigars as a means to break the habbit.

I missed the BOOM too. I think that was a good thing. I bought a bunch of stock at the tail end of the stock market BOOM at the end of the 90's. I wished I'd missed that BOOM too. I'd still have that cash. Did the cigar boom benifit us today.

I dont miss the boom at all, before the boom I was getting a box of 10 Furnte Canones ( 8.5 x 52 ) for under 30 bucks a box, RETAIL !!!! now that cigar is almost 10 bucks a stick in some places, , all the yuppies & want to bes, drove up the demand & the quality of a lot of cigars went down, , there was a bunch of junk on the market then & some of it is still out there, (papayo ,investa, alhambra, jamacia bay & montague ) a lot are not being made any more but there so many still out there clogging up humidors . So I dont miss the Boom at all Enjoy, Vince

Wait until the post-Castro cuban boom. 8)
I don't think it will be a good thing. Prices are gonna shoot thru the roof. Could you imagine the demand? Eeeeek!

Even long after Castro is gone, Cuba won't be able to improve their tobacco farms. The reason for this is that with the US out of the market for direct export, Castro planted higher profit earning sugar cane in former tobacco fields to take up slack in the economy. But sugar cane is like a weed and robs soil of its nutrients. Because of this these fields are now useless for growing tobacco with the traditional Cuban flavor.

So, if the market ever increased they either wouldn't have the fields to keep up with the needed tobacco or they would use those fields and Cubans would forever be different. Also, even if they didn't use those fields, you can only plant so much in a growing season.

So as a cigar smoker, this is why I don't want the embargo lifted.

If Cuba opened up and became a capitalist economy it'd be really wild. Sort of a gold rush I'd expect.

I expect we'd start seeing all kinds of made in Cuba but not really "Cuban" cigars on the market Cuban Macanudo anyone? Or how about some lovely short filler machine made sticks? Cuban Antonio y Cleopatra Grenadiers?
If much of the old tobacco land is as shot as iminaquagmire suggests, perhaps they'll just import tobacco from elsewhere.

The good Cuban makes would still use tobacco from good fields. You'd just have to be a lot more careful about what you buy.

We might also start seeing some of the premium makers in other countries importing quality Cuban tobacco. Using the assorted great wrapper leaves grown in other places could result in some very interesting smokes.

I was 13 in 93 when I started to become interested in the "cigar culture"

So I guess I grew up right along side it, I didn't realize it at the time though.....

and I've been paying as much attention to cigars as possible since then!
