Well, I went to San Francisco and bought some cigars and other stuff. Here's a pic

From left to right, Tatuaje (or what's left of it :p), Montecristco White, Opius X, and CAO Gold.

Also in the pic is (obviously) a lighter, cigar cutter, and a humidor bag.

The Tatuaje okay, I suppose. I got light headed, and currently feeling nauseous. :|

Lighting it was a bit difficult for this first (okay 2nd) timer. I should go back and read Lighting Cigars 101.

Altogether the purchase came to $ 100. WOW! Not an everyday occurrence for me.

I'm open to tips on how to make my next smoke enjoyable! Because of the price, I think my next smoke will be after Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanks for all the help in my earlier post! You guys are a cool bunch.

You got some quality cigars there.

It looks like you have the bare essentials for starting a cigar collection and that's good :)

If you intend to be a real cigar smoker, you definately need a couple of quality humidors. I currently have three, my everyday box, my holiday/good times box and my don't-open-until-the-apocalypse box. Look for something between 50-75 ct for your first humidor. Make sure it has spanish cedar, and check to see if it closes properly (you should hear a whoosh when you close it). After that, simply bring the humidity up to 68-72%. I like to break in a new humidor by putting a damp sponge in an double-bagged open plastic bag for a couple of days. After that, I simply put a small dish of humidification beads and allow it to stabilize at 70%.

Also, you can find very nice smokes for $3-5 instead of 15-50 per single. They smoke almost as nicely, sometimes even better depending on your tastes. This lets you smoke a bit more often and also you don't feel as guilty smoking a $3 cigar compared to a $45 dollar cigar.

I wish you luck and good smoking to ya!

Try the Cigar.com Cameroon label!! Quality smoke for just over 2 bucks a stick. You will not be disappointed.

0mar, thanks for the humidor suggestion. At this point I'm not sure if I want to be a serious cigar smoker. I'm pretty athletic (weight lifter and hopeful MMA/UFC fighter) and don't want smoking to affect me too badly.

What smokes do you reccomend for that price range? I wanted to try the 5 Vegas Series A, but they didn't have it at the shop. Ah well *shrug*

Capt, as soon as I turn 21 (and get a credit card... yee, I'd rather not to be honest) I'll give cigar.com a go. I'm gonna see if there's an alernate way of payment right now.

USMC, Axe, thanks for the positive notes of my selection. I had some expert help on these boards. ;)

I hope you like the CAO Gold, it is a personal everyday favorite of mine along with the Cusano 18

The Tatuaje got you light headed and nauseous?
Then the Opus is gonna knock you on your ASS!

Better have a full stomach before you have that one!

So you wanna be an MMA fighter? What do you study?
I was involved in MMA for about 10 years before I joined the Marine Corps. Good times if you like to be in pain constantly! HAHA

I studied (still do) American Kenpo for 22 years and Shikaidojitsu (japanese) for 15. Along with cross training in several other arts just to get a good base for MMA. You can't limit yourself to one or two disciplines if you want to be competetive.

The Tatuaje okay, I suppose. I got light headed, and currently feeling nauseous. :|

If you had stuck a toothpick in that nub, you could have smoked some more of it!! lol

Welcome to the forum, a good cheap cigar is not that hard to find, try the one of the Indian Tabac's or a Flor De Oliva. The CAO Blacks aren't too bad either.

I am in the same boat you are in, we pay a pile of taxes in Canada and what should cost 5 bucks is closer to 7 or 8.
Good Luck and have fun with the new hobby!

Jason762, don't worry about cigars affecting your athletic ability in a negative fashion. Now CIGARETTES, that's a different story. Stay away from them. That's a no spin fact. You could smoke 2-3 Churchills a day, which is rare, though not unheard of, especially among a crowd like this, and STILL not incur increased risks by more than 5-10% on most lip, mouth and throat concerns (read cancers). Enjoy your cigars, and as an ex-bodybuilder with other basic athletic talents and some perfunctory martial arts training (Tae Kwon Do and Ving Tsun), just remember, moderation, and every part of your life style has it's place, as long as nothing's taking over.

Devil Dog, is that light headedness and nauseous feeling typical of smoking cigars? Sheesh, now I'm a bit intimidated by the Opius X. Ah well, whatever happens, happens. :p It'll be fun trying it.

I'm currently into the tried and true cliché, Muay Thai, but haven't mixed it with anything yet. I want to be an expert at Muay Thai before moving onto the other tried and true cliché, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu.

I gave serious thought to Kempo (Chuck Liddel started out with that) but for some reason I picked Muay Thai instead. I don't know if you watched The Ultimate Fighter, but that big guy, Gayano? He's one of the coaches that you see in the background. He’s the Asian guy with a shaved head. Well, he's the head coach at the gym, Fairtex. :-D How's that for a Muay Thai knee to the stomach?

Bikeman, a toothpick in the nub? What the heck for? :?

MacAllan, Akido, eh? The same style Steven Stegal uses, right? I've heard it takes about 10 years to master. YIKES!

Bloofington, glad to hear that cigars won't affect my athletic ability. I'm VERY relieved.

Heh,
just remember, moderation, and every part of your life style has it's place, as long as nothing's taking over.

As a former bodybuilder you should know that BBing pretty much takes over you life! Cutting, bulking, 1 gram of protein per pound, 40/40/20 split, cardio, lifting. Lol, it's impossible for it NOT to take over your life. I'm thinking about cutting right now so I can get on with the Muay Thai though. I think mass will be useless for Muay Thai and just puts me in a higher weight class that what I should be in (currently 210 @ 6' 2" and about 13% body fat).

Bkelm18, outside Muay Thai, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and Kempo, I don't know much about the martial art. I was unaware of different "styles" of Karate. I thought it was all one and the same. Obviously, I'm wrong. What is that style like?

Congrats on your first smokes.
Heck of a good selection there.
I do hope, however that you got an OPUS X, and not an OPIUS -- I hear the filler on the OPIUS has a lot more kick. . .

Anyhow, I never had cigar smoking adversely affect my athletic pursuits, including serious downhill skiing, powerlifting or Aikkido.

Cigar smoking is a very relaxing hobby to me, and I enjoy it quite a bit, and it gets me into less trouble than my woman hobby.

Good advice on getting a humidor. Definitely get one, even if it's just for your good smokes. Those Opuses, Montecristos, et al, should be properly cared for, and as you can tell, at those prices they aren't daily smokes. I keep my good ones in a humi, and just pick up my cheap daily smokes once a week, and keep them in one of those humi bags. Keeps them good enough for the week.

As for being light-headed and nauseus, try inhaling a bit less. I've made something of a sport out of getting hard-core cigarette smokers to puke by offering them a cigar. Go easy as you get acclimated. You might want to use this as a good time to check out those cheap cigars, so you can really enjoy that Opus without praying to the porcelin god.

I studied Tang Soo Do for roughly 6 years. Id like to get back into it...

Jason,
It's not typical. You need to inhale less, like Magnum said.
Actually, all you should do is inhale into your mouth only and hold it for a few seconds, taste it, savor it, appreciate it, then blow it out.
You never want to take it into your lungs (on the count that one cigar has about as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes!) it's just something that you want to enjoy not depend on, know what I mean?
Just remember to have a FULL stomach before you ENJOY the Opus!

Muay Thai is an awesome discipline if you have the time to dedicate to it. Kempo is a great art to give you a base. Like I said before, never limit yourself to one thing. Gain knowledge of several different arts to give yourself a broad range of ability.

I am surprised that they even had Opus' in that store. Out of curiosity, what did you pay for it?

Calibus, a very cool $ 18.50 Hope it's worth it. I'm thinking about letting it age a year or two. Should I do that?

Man! I can't wait to turn 21, and be able to buy on-line!
