Cigars that age well

Hey guys, I've become more and more interested in the effects of aging on a good cigar lately, and I'm wondering what some good cigars to set aside for a few months (or years?). I'm thinking that based on my own experience and what I've read that good full bodied cigars such as Camacho Corojo, GH no.5, and Joya de Nicaragua 1970 would age quite nicely. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what to age and for how long?

Pretty much any of the fuller bodied full flavor cigars should age nicely....

Cien Anos are great to age and are much much better after some Aging, of course any of the fuller bodied Fuente, Cubans especially do very well.....

What I have is a book that I keep track of boxes I smoke over time, I'll smoke say one a month, or every other month and take notes...when the box is done I review all the reviews and write an overview to see how the effects of aging played pro or con....

It's all trial and error....but there are some cigars that age better than others....

I'm sure there will be a lot more suggestions coming your way....

i aged a box of padron 2000s for one year and they were spectacular. Other than that i haven't opened most of my boxes being aged yet so i cant comment on those cigars.

I don't remember where but I read somewhere that natural cigars age better than full bodied cigars. Personally, I don't think this is true but it kind of makes sense.

They say in a fuller body cigar (one that is usually a maduro), the wrapper has been 'cooked' many times and will not age properly or something.

I don't know. I think it's best that you experiment =]

For me, I age maduro's before I age naturals.

the aging for cooked cigars they are referring to are for maduro wrappers that are not really maduros. They were aged a very high temperature to darken the wrappers to give them more of a maduro look. I am not sure which cigars age better per say. I find they very from brand to brand. I find cameroons are always bad agers. Here is what I have found so far.

Good Aging:

Oliva Master Blends
Davidoff Millenium (very good ager)
Padron Anniversary (very good ager)
Punch Rare Corojo
Cusano C10
Graycliff Crystal
Opus X
Punch Regular Line
Davidoff
La Gloria Cubana
El Rico Habano
Padron

Bad Aging:

Almost all Cameroon Wrapper Cigars (CAO, Cohiba, R & J)
Cusano 18
Ashton VSG
Ashton
Ashton Maduro
Partagas
Hoyo
CAO Italia
H. UPmann
AVO
Fuente Regular Line (Again Cameroon Wrapper)
Torano

There are more but all this is what comes to mind first.

Yeah, the Padron anniversary are aged around 5 years before they even hit the shelf so yupyup.

I don't think gran habano is a good ager =\
I had one the other day and it didn't seem as flavourful as they used to be half a year ago. Maybe I just picked out a bad stick.

Well, the flavor profile definately mellows out with time....

Wow, do cigars mellow that quickly? I thought it took years! Well, I've only been aging the GH since November so that's just about 6 months.

I Can Attest...

the CAO Italias do not age well at all. But no worry for me, the box is usually gone in 3 to 4 weeks.

However, I do enjoy how the Onyx Reserves age, I bought a Box about a year ago. In my opinion they were very strong and harsh, but now they smoke beautifully. Still a full body smoke, but mellowed a bit with a lot of creamy smoke.

i just had a GH #5 the other day and i enjoyed it. This is a cigar i need to get a few more of so i can try them out. It made more smoke than any cigar i think i have ever had.

Bildo, You are Right

I smoked a few GH #5 about a month ago. You are right, those make mouthful after mouthful of rich smoke. And it doe not take much of a draw.

Just ask the Old Lady about how smoky a room can get with a single GH #5.

Thanks for the information, guys. I've got to concur with SteelerFan and Bildo, those Gran Habanos produce voluminous ammounts of smoke, and I just love the aroma!

I like the gran habano but be careful of vearing away fromt he no. 5 corojo blend. I find there two other blends (1 and 3) are not nearly as good. They came out with sterling edition but I have not seen much about it.

I'm down to my last few GH#5's and I'm ready to order a new box! These ARE great smokes, they're simply delicious, and they smell great too! Though, they do canoe on me a lot.

I agree with Macallan, stick with the #5. I've tried the #3 and it just simply isn't as satisfying.

I've not tried the #3 or the #1, not a big fan of Conneticut Shade or H2000 (I think that's what the local shop said was on the #3). I may give the #3 a try sometime, just to see what it's like and it's not that expensive, 4.50 for a Torpedo.
