As the topic title says you are speaking to a complete pre-newbie.

Never have I smoked a cigar (and I don't/won't touch cigarettes)....Please forgive my stupid questions, but would appreciate honest answers:

1. At what age do you believe it would be best for someone to start smoking cigars? Would 19 or 20 years old be too young or should someone wait until the body has matured a bit more to take in cigars?
2. What is the danger of smoking cigars in moderation---- a couple on a weekend and a couple during the weekdays?
3. How does someone really not "inhale" a cigar? Wouldn't that be almost impossible?
4. What cigar should someone start out with?
5. Any other basic advice for someone that is a complete pre-newbie?

I can answer a couple of questions:
1. I don't think 20 is too young. I'm 20 and enjoy cigars very much. I think it's just your personal preference.

3. When someone speaks of "inhaling" a cigar, they mean inhaling it into your lungs. The point of smoking the cigar is to keep the smoke in your mouth so you can taste it. It's not that hard to only inhale into your mouth.

Hope this helps a little.

Welcome to this great hobby. I started when I was 14, the earlier you start learning the better in my opinion. Cigar smoking is meant to be a palatable thing, a lot like wine the flavors and texture, aroma, are to be enjoyed through the mouth and sinuses. As far as health, one really can't tell, I have heard one a day should be pretty reasonable without harm, of coarse everyone is different. As far as what to smoke, I would choose something that has a very mild body. The body is what will make you sick and knock you off your feet. There is a ton of advice you could learn around here, so just ask and I'm sure the guys will be more than willing to help.

I agree. And as far as what to start with, try light Connecticut shade wrapped cigars, which have mostly Dominican filler and binder. They're generally mild and smooth. Some have a bit of a kick. They're great to break in on.

Some examples:

CAO Gold
La Unica
Playboy
The Griffins
Cuesta Rey Centenario
Leon Jimenes
Dunhill
Helix

Bloofington, HELIX??? Never smoke a cigar with a name that you can find on a human anatomy chart!

A poster named Phoenix asked some newbie questions a couple months back. I'll see if I can pull up the thread, it may answer some of your questions.

I try to stay away from anything available regularly on the fron counter of your local 7-11. AVO is my favorite mild cigar. It's a great starter.

Cigar smoking is same as any other adult vice. Only legal age adults should smoke, and I dont encourage anyone under age to try it.
In Texas its age 18.Get caught and its a stiff fine.

If you are legal age, I say its best to begin with a mild Claro or medium mild-Natural. Dont spend a lot on 1st one or 2 but dont get the cheapest as it may give the wrong 1st impres.
Ive said it before, find good cigar shop and ask clerk for help. Thats what theyre there for.

If its a female about to try smoking(dont jump on me for sexism)I can say my non smoking wife likes to try the flavored cigars(frankly they make me sick). Most smokers would call them candy or toy cigars. She likes the Cojimar in Vanilla but they come in mango, rum, honey or cherry.
:barf:
Just dont stand to close to me.

Good luck,have fun.

Ah yes, the Avo!!! How could I forget the Avo No. 3, one of my all-time favorites. Also the regular Ashton, now called the Ashton Classic. Both are incredibly wonderful, smooth, mild cigars. The Ashton Classic has a smoke with the consistency of a dry champagne, bubbles included.

Thanks everybody. For the third question, I was under the impression that you "suck" the cigar, which the smoke primary goes down to your stomach, and the rest you exhale. So you just "suck it in and spit it out"? I do understand that having it enter your lungs is a big no-no, though. Just want to be absolutely clear.

I guess it could be described similar to sucking through a straw, it's the same kind of motion except the smoke stays in your mouth, from there you either blow it through your nose or through your mouth, you don't need to use your lungs at all. In fact I believe you get thicker smoke when you just pull it into your mouth

No. Definitely not. That's the point. In NO type of smoking (yes, THAT type too, you're all WRONG, those who do and teach others to do it THAT way!!!) do you "suck" the smoke into your mouth. When you smoke a cigar, you gently press your lips onto the cigar from all around. This AUTOMATICALLY causes smoke to enter your mouth. You then savor it in your mouth, twirling the smoke the way you would a sip of wine, top shelf cognac or whiskey, and then exhale. You do NOT suck smoke into your mouth, and I say AGAIN, even when smoking THAT stuff!!!

So you just "suck it in and spit it out"?

Me thinks, you are a prankster  now.

If you are serious ok,but I cannot relate to the smoking method

The best way to describe puffing is cigars is to sip it. Sip it like you would a fine scotch. Sipping the cigar allows the smoke to hit your taste buds.
