Lost in translation
Well the wife just got plain tired of looking at three humiodors on my dresser and told me to get them outta there, so I made a coolerdor out of a 50 quart igloo. It should hold me over for the next few months. I've got 2 20 count humidors in it right now along with a box of Savinelli's and some empty spanish cedar cigar boxes from my father in law. In total 6 boxes worth of spanish cedar. I'm thinking that should be enough wood for now. Now I need to get some more humifditication. Right now I'm seasoning it with 2 glasses of distilled water, 2 round passive humidifiers, 4 boveda packs (69%) and 3 tubes of the crytal gel humdification in there. I'll see how we are doing on the RH when I get home tonight. Last night after I finished adding duck tape to the side to give me a tighter seal on the edges (I was thinking weather stripping but could not find it and I may be too tight for this application) the hygrometer read 46. That was right after I added everything in new. Now would you think that with the 2 glasses of water out and a large passive humidifier in there along with a dish of humidification beads (or cat litter) it would be suitable? I just don't have the 100 bucks to spend on a cigar oasis right now. Thanks again for the help.

Not to encourage your spending but. . . JR Cigars has that special where you buy a box of Monte Vintage '93 Club Cabinet, RyJ Aniversario or H. Upmann Super Fuerte and you get a Cigar Oasis for free. The Oasis will be placed on backorder for you. ETA: mid-June.

I haven't had any problems with my Oasis. Just a thought.

Quick question. When building a coolerdor, do you need to cedar line it?

No, but it adds the cedar smell which insects hate. It also helps to regulate the humidity.

Phish, according to the heartfelt site, 1/3 pound of beads is sufficient. Adding other devices would just be counterproductive in my mind. However I would put a fan in there. A battery operated OUST fan would work.

Rich, I think most people just keep the cigars in their cedar boxes, so no need to line the cooler...you can also just break up some extra boxes and place the wood where ever it will fit.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went out and got some bead media. Not the heartfelt kind, but the gritty kitty kind (got a 5 pound contaier of exquisicat crystal litter). I now have enough crystal media for a life time. Anyone need some crystals?

Questions from a cigar newbie: Do you have two entire humidors in the cooler, or the contents from them? What would be the advantage of putting the entire humidor in there? Wouldn't the space taken by the humidor be better used if there were just trays in the coolerdor?

Thanks,

Another noob here...
I hate to hijack your thread phish, but I have a question regarding a coolerdor.

I have a 120 qt cooler with 11 boxes in it. I am using one pound of beads, but no fan. The beads are in seperate containers, spread around through the cooler. The question is...do I need a fan.

By the way...I have been lurking here awile, and have learned alot from you guys and girl. Awsome forum.

Thanks,
Mike

Do you NEED a fan probalby not but it is not a bad idea, The cost is nothing so better safe than sorry

I would suggest a fan as well. The inside volume of a cooler can be quite large and can be difficult to get a nice even distribution of the moisture in the air without a fan.

I just want to make sure i got this coolerdoor thing down.

1 cooler
1 oust fan
the right amount of heartfelt beads for the amount of cigars and space.
some cedar boxes/lining

and thats all you need to have a larger storage area

Already? Boys we got another one, Hook line and sinker.

I kept a bunch of coolers at one time - a great way to age stock,
buy by the box and follow as the cigar develops with time.

My suggestion if you sit the cooler as it was built to sit is the bottom
can get damper than the rest plastic not working the same as wood.
I used to keep the bottom boxes on something (cedar strips)
I never used a fan & can see how it would help with this.

(Just don't try to take anything you wife hangs her cloth is now or has her eye on :? )

Welcome to the dark side Railed, and don't worry it sounds like you are being well advised to me!!

Welcome mohner, it sounds like you have a great set up for sure. Now we need to boost this thread with some pictures!!

When I got home from work today carrying the box that Chris sent me, and my wife asked me when I was going to smoke all of the cigars. So I go into the whole thing about aging and collecting and experiencing them as they get better and change with age. I than tell her that I am in need of a new humi and that I was thinking about a fridgador. She said that sounds ugly and said why dont you just turn the coat closet into a big humidor. Love that woman of mine. Now it starts I am asking for ideas and suggestions. Thank you.

Ask Capt. Head would have first hand experience. but you would need Cedar, shelves for boxes and drawers for singles. a humidifier and a door with a good seal.

I just wanted to say sorry i didn't mean to steal this thread for that minute.

wow i think your wife's a keeper huh.

good luck w/ that Closet humi anyways.

And can you just use a regular humidifier at that point or is there a diffrence between one of those and a cigar oasis?

Railed, with as many thread as I have "De-railed" (HAHAHAHA) I certainly don't mind when it happens to mine.
