Dish Network - is it worth switching?

I am at a crossroads with my cable company. First off, I hate them (Service Electric) and they are all that is available up here in Sussex County. They need to re-wire if I am to keep them because it can't handle the two converter boxes (which I need to have digital downstairs) because the old wiring sucks.

My local telephone company is offering a deal with Dish Network which combined with phone and dsl will drop my bill $20 to $30. I have a DVR that records 2 channels at once and I understand I can get that with Dish.

Does anybody have any experience with this company? Most people that I know have Direct TV as their satellite provider - if they were in the offer I would take it based on their recommendations.

Do both companies offer HD? If you have an HD ready telivision go with whichever offers the most in those channels. I have 21 channels of HD through my local Cable company along with the however many channels they offer. I rarey watch anything outside of the HD any longer

I don't know if the YES Network is important to you, but one of the dish companies doesn't offer it and the other does. Not sure which has it.

My local company offers some - but at a premium. Currently I don't have HD (I know, I know - time to get with it) - but I believe Dish offers more than my local.

Once you have HD you will never go back. Good reason to talk the wife into a new plasma!!! :D

I am sure that HD will be my next upgrade.

And YES network is not carried by Dish - although I am not a Yankee fan so I don't really watch it now.

Anyone have any experience with Dish Network itself? The equipment, service, etc?

i have had dish network for about 5 years and am very happy with it. had direct before and had some problems and switched and very happy that i did. hopethat helps :D

I do actualy have it at my house in the mountais. I have never had a problem with any of the equipment, and they did a very nice job of instilation. It realy depends on what you want weather it is worth it or not. Are you gaining channels, while also dropping price? I personaly prefer our cable providor over the dish, but that could be because I am used to it and because we order all of the movie channels, HBO, Show, Skinamax, etc. One thing for sure if you don't like it you can always go back!

Thanks guys. I want to make the decision on Wednesday and just get it done. I am dropping the price and adding channels (especially Disney because my kids are dying for it).

The dual DVR holds up to 350 hours of programming - that's pretty cool.

Sounds cool. Hope you enjoy. Disney has been my personal babysiter for years, your kids will love it!

I did just the opposite. I had Dish and was very happy with it until I wanted to upgrade to HD. The Dish customer service was terrible. I spoke to 3 different people/3 different phone calls, each with the same horrible attitude. I was given the run-around and not given a clear answer regarding price or estimated installation date(s).

So, I switched to Directv. The cost is/was about the same, but Dish offers more sports channels without buying the premium sports package.

For me the reception with Directv is much more robust than with Dish. Dish seemed to have a lot more issues with wind and rain.

Hope this helps.

Just got dish 5-6 months ago, installation was done very discrete price was cheaper than direct. I second dish has isues with rain/wind. all in all I would recommend Dish over direct tv

living here in florida you would think the rainstorms would be a real problem. but for me i rarely losr reception it has to be a big storm directly southwest of me for there to be any problems. and then it usually only lasts a few minutes. even a couple of years ago when we had all the hurricanes whizzing by it was not a problem. the only problem i have ever had was the dish getting hit by lightning they were here in a couple of days and fixed everything. if you do go with dish make sur you get their maintanence program i think it is called they fix and only costs me a couple of bucks each month.

Wow - good idea on the service contract. Man, I am glad I asked about this. Please feel free to chime in. The phone company is going to call me in a day or two - I am definitely thinking that cable is going adios.

I had direct a few years ago and hated it.
High winds or if it was snowing and we would
lose reception all the time. Went cable and never looked back.
IMHO.
