Hello all! Been lurking around for a while, trying to gather up some knoweldge and suggestions on what would be awesome as a nightly smoke.
So I finally have the money to get some decent cigars...and looking around at cigar.com..my head has started to spin. Ive read all the info and such..but i still am pretty clueless as to what would be a good starter.
Im lookin at a smoke that lasts around 30-40mins as an after work relaxation type thing (I usually sip some brandy, whiskey, or scotch after work...imma package handler at FedEx working the 2am-7am shift) and would like to start experimenting with some non-walmart bought cigars.
Ive smoked a couple genuine cuban cigars with my dad when we pulled into Cuba on a Tiger cruise when he was still in the Navy, and found that I liked it,(Im a youngin, 19) and recieved a box of Hemingway's from my grandfather before he died, and I enjoyed those. I dont have a real big budget, so the Heminway's are outta the question, especially with the moduro wrappers.
I guess my budget is ~$40-50 a box. I prefer the Robusto size.
So what would you guys recommened?
Thanks ahead of time

First of all, welcome to the forum Syntax. Stick around and you will get plenty of ideas of what is good and what is not, just like I have done.

I highly recomend, along with most others of the forum, that the Cusano 18 is a must. You might have to stretch your budget and find another $20 in order to purchase a box for some good, non Walmart boxes! Look into some of the sampler packs also. Cigar.com has just recently started a special on Fridays, maybe you might want to see what those are.

If you get the chance, jump in the Pass it Forward thread. You might end up getting something you really like, and might consider buying a box of.

Welcome to our world Syntax. C18's are a great choice, as well as cigar.com's Cameroon line.
You should also consider picking up a robusto sampler which would give you the opportunity
to try several brands before investing in a box.

welcome!

I'll give you some advice that was given to me when I was starting out.

Try EVERYTHING you can get your hands on. IMO, it's not really the best idea to start buying cigars by the box when you start out. Like axe said, try some samplers, buy some singles, get an idea of what you like and what you don't like. Once you get a better handle on what's good for you and what's not so good to you, then you can start buying boxes.

Don't let me influence you unhealthily though...spend your money as you see fit. I'm merely making a suggestion.

The most important thing to remember is, what's good for me might taste like crap to you, and vice-versa.

welcome to the madness!

Im glad to be here!

I was looking at the Cameroon line last night as a possibility, but I actually had a few questions about the cigars that are in my price range of $40-60box...are most of those going to be..i think the term is, long fill or short fill?

I dont have a humidor yet, so that was a main reason for not buying a box yet...I have no clue how long cigars are OK to go outside of a humi before drying up. So that leads to another question...what would be a good starting humidor? Im not really lookin to spend too much money in that department, as Im just starting off, and who knows...this may just be an impulse thing of wanting to get into something else to spend money on lol.

So I think ill place in order here in a few mins for some samplers and singles. Any recommendations on any certain sampler? And how long will those sticks be ok for outside of a humi, and what would be good to store them in till I get one?

Since you're not sure how long you'll be into cigars I would say just use a tupperware type container to store them. Just make sure to keep it out of direct sunlight (or any light for that matter). If you order from cigar.com they include a humidification device called a water pillow which keeps humidity at around 70%. You could get away with using that for awhile, and can always add some distilled water to it once it begins to dry up.
As far as the quality of cigars, most which are made up of short filler tobacco usually say so in their description. Most hand-made cigars are long filler.
If you have any questions about a particular brand, ask away :)

try an A. Fuente 858 maduro and an Ashton Aged Maduro...those are a couple of my favorites. I really like the Hemingways too. The 858 is longer than a robusto, but it is an exceptional smoke.

nice choices overall

Yeah those are good choices, and I'll second what Wolfdaddy said about the 858 maduro, I've yet to have a bad one.

Welcome, welcome, welcome. The best piece of advice I will give you, is DO NOT listen to Macallan and Axegod about the Fuente Short Story with coffee in the morning. YOU WILL BREAK YOUR BUDGET!! I tried it once and I was hooked. It is the "breakfast of champions here at the forum. It can get a little expensive, but it is oooooo soooooo gooooood!!!

Thanks for the info. Any recommendations on a tiny(25ct) humi? Im on a tight budget right now (lol..cigar smoking isnt for people like me). Im going to check out some humi's that I saw at Bed, Bath, and Beyond (dont laugh) and see if they are any good and prices.

I think Im going to kick out the cigar.com branded cigar and maybe go for another Hemingway..I LOVED the box my grandfather bought me for Christmas a number of years ago. He himself was a big cigar man, he died with an OpusX in hand...Im tryin to talk my grandmother out of all his humi's and lighters...but shes not budging.

Welcome Syntax.

I'll agree with Capt on the Hemingway Short Story and coffee in the morning. Pricey, but hard to beat. I'll also have a Fuente Exquisito with morning coffee if time or funds are short. My main robusto size range smoke is the CAO Brazilia GOL. Others I enjoy include the 5 Vegas 'A' Artisan, Torano Exodus '59, Punch Rare Corojo Magnum ... well, I guess my list could go on and on. I have yet to buy a box of anything, I like trying variety of cigars.

You could join the Cigar of the Month Club on a monthly basis and get different cigars to try.

Syntax,
One name to try: Rocky Patel. His vintage cigars are very smooth yet flavourful and I think they would be great for a novice smoker (like myself) to start off with.

Awesome.
So what's a good everyday smoke? Im gettin ready to hit the order button...but I want to be sure that Im completely satisfied with my order before doing so.
So far I have:

Montecristo Platinum 5 x 50, Natural, Dominican
Cusano 18 Robusto, 5 x 50, Natural, Dominican
Romeo y Julieta Vintage No. 1, 6 x 43, Natural, Dominican
CAO L Anniversaire Cameroon Robusto, 5 x 50, Cameroon, Nicaraguan
La Aurora Robusto, 5 x 50, Natural, Dominican
Arturo Fuente Hemingway Signature (Perfecto), 6 x 47, Cameroon, Dominican

Im lookin at throwing in 1 or two more...recommendations?

Syntax you can do a search here for threads in which cheaper smokes were discussed. Cigar smoking doesn't have to break the bank. There are some decent cheaper sticks out there for everyday smokes. I keep a bundle of Consuegra, a few Fuente Curly Head Deluxe, a few Padron Fumas, and a few Fuente Exquisitos on hand for everyday smokes.

I would not have removed the cameroon label but you guys probably think I am a little bit biased. I think it sizes up to the the hemmingways and don carlos because of the cameroon wrapper.

For clarification the CCOM labels are a mixed filler, however it is tabadom filler so you are most likely smoking the chopped ends of davidoffs and AVO in the filler. Cant beat it.

I cant believe no one has suggested the Flor de Oliva bundles. I would say try one of each of the corojo, natural, maduro, and gold. If you find one of those that fits your palate you will be in economic heaven. Pound for pound those bundles are the best deal out there.

Just don't smoke the cigars that come with that deal. A lot of their stuff that appeals to novices and people on a budget seriously either looks or tastes like the floor sweepings of a Fuente roller or something. Also everything you get from them, unsubscribe to it or they will hound you indefinitely.

Otherwise you've got some good cigars there.

Lol. I do plan on at least trying out the Phoenix's...Hell I paid for them (more for the lighter and the humidor, pretty decent deal), but they are comming, so might as well give them a try. Now, to wait
