Went to the local shop today for a good score. Question about some A Fuentes I picked up.

1. Why do some of the Fuente line have a green / black ribbon at the end and cedar sleeves?
2. Hemingway and Don Carlos are the only ones with black trim on the band correct? The 'regular' Fuente line has green trim.
3. Sooooo.....How can you tell the difference between Hemingway and Don Carlos.

I got some small ones (about short story size) with the black trim, a cedar sleeve and black ribbon. They were only $3.25 ea. I thought they were hemingways, but did not see them in the picture on the Fuente Cigar Family site.

:? :? :?

Barring any special edition or rarity, green ribbons are regular line Fuentes, while the black ribbon is for the sungrown line (black trim on band as well). 858 Rosado's also have the black trim on the band but sport a red ribbon at the foot.

The way to distinguish the Hemingway line is by their shape. They are figurado, and are pointed to varying degrees on both ends of the cigar.

The $3.25 cigar you purchased is most likely the Chateau Fuente Sungrown which is a great smoke. If in fact it is a Don Carlos robusto, I'll be sending a large check your way to pick me up a few

Ah ha!!! Thanks so much guys. Yes, mine is the Sun Grown. Still at $3.25 a pop, they are a good deal. Also picked up a few Hemingway signature for $6.

I agree on the sun growns. I've smoked two last week (one I got in a PIF and have dished out several in out-going PIFs). For $3.25 they're a steal IMO. They have the Fuente quality like all their sticks, and very flavorful as well.

And while we're on the subject; any opinions of the Don Carlos line? I haven't heard much about them on this forum. Lots of Hemingway talk and OpusX, but never Don Carlos???

Don Carlos' are great, a bold tasting cigar with a kick. They are smooth, but unless they're well aged, they'll taste bold and kick hard. I think Vince starts every day with a Don Carlos No. 3, or at least he used to.

I have not had alot of experience with the A Fuente line. My local shop is still in the process of getting an account. Anyway he did score one box of the Don Carlos #2.

I fell it love with my first one. I have never tasted a cigar that could carry that much flavor. I had no idea it was even possible for a cigar to be that flavorful. I have since smoked a couple and have loved each one.

I have had some of those Don Carlos for quite a while now, I have been giving them some rest. Maybe its time to smoke one and give a little review.

There you go gents, smoke 'em if you've got 'em!!

Axe hit the nail on the head.

Green Ribbon = Connecticut wrapper
Black Ribbon = Sun Grown wrapper (or rosado in some cases)
Green band = regular line
Black Band = Hemmingway/ Don Carlos
Special Selection band = Machine Rolled (ie curly head deluxe)

Whoa! 8-5-8 Rosados?!? I've heard of (but never seen) the 8-5-8 Sungrown, but not the rosado. I would love it if someone would give me more details on either of these. The 8-5-8 Cameroons and Maduros are among my favorites so I can image how great the sungrowns and rosados would be. Are they still making them?

858 Sungrowns are still made, but in much less quantity than the rest of the SG line. Casa Fuente has them for around 2 1/2 bills per box of 25. On the east coast I've picked them up for about 3.50 each...they are out there, just have to do some intense searching.

The 858 Rosado was a one time release back in '02. I was fortunate enough to have one gifted to me, but I won't smoke it until I have another in my posession...which will probably never happen :(

Shops that participate in a special fuente window display program every christmas are allocated a couple of boxes of 858 sun grown. That is really the only time of year you will see them.

I really appreciate the info. I'll be looking around for these about Christmas time. If anyone happens to know that they get them at their local shop, please let me know. Thanks for your help. :D

87 boxes...50 cigars a box. That's 4,350 cigars, released 4 years ago. Yeah, I don't really have my hopes too high on getting my hands on one of those. :) I appreciate the info, Moki. Welcome to the forum!

Definitely take a look at Moki's site if you get the chance. Just make sure you don't drool on your keyboard. :)
