i thought someone might be interested in this...
my class this summer is constructing a gate which is to go up at the national ornamental metals museum in memphis tn. we started two weeks ago, and have two weeks left! theres a lot of work to be done, but i have to say, it is one of the most satisfying things ive ever done.

as always, if anyone has any specific questions or whatever, feel free to post or pm me

hopefully in two weeks, ill have a finished pic for yall!

We could burn that out of sheet steel on our plasma burning table. Then all you'd have to do is hang it.

then you wouldnt get to hit anything
but seriously, with all of those elements hand forged, its gonna be pimped out!

Nice Gate, Big Project! Good Luck

I'm in the steel business. SBQ bar stock, mostly for the forging industry. We have a facility near Midway in Chicago.
Rounds, Hexs, Squares, very little in flats and structurals.
The guys nextdoor here did some free standing patio surrounds with pre-fab ornaments that looked great.
Have you ever heard of Hoffman Forge? Does alot of hand forging here in Pittsburgh for Historical applications and recreations.

Let me know if you ever need help locating stock.

Razor,

We have a full line Steel Service Center about 80 miles south of Pittsburgh. We don't deal to much in SBQ bars though. We sell mild steel to quite a few blacksmiths in the area and donate all the steel to our local "fort" which their Smith uses in his recreations of things from the 18th/19th Century. One of my customers even sold me one of his hand done Damascus knife with a deer horn handle with scrimshaw on it.

Right on shakes!! That gate will be the stuff! Then you can come out and make a set for me!!! Pimp my gates! That is going to be very nice bro, definately something to be proud of!

thanks guys, but after this experience, i dont know if ill be working on gates for a while!... the tolerences are to tight!

if you need some candle sticks or something, look me up. i love measuring those...

thats what im used to.

but for real guys, i dont mean to be presumptious or foreward (im actually drunk right now...) but it seems that a couple of you boys have deep pockets. some hand made iron work is just the thing to empty them in my mind!

Shake,
I always wanted to Iron work - but after my accident I have trouble doing Jewelry. I am sure my back/neck wouldn't like larger projects.
I enjoy looking at the work your doing!
I want one - but my pockets are sown shut :?

The only Service Ctr. I deal with in WV is in Daily, Valley Steel.
Not to many forgers outside of actual smiths left there. Some open die guys and machine shops. Most of our stuff ends up in automotive and agriculture. I've made a good push into the gun market and we currently handle barrel stock for a few manufacturers.
Once you know what Damascus is and how it's made, you can easily realize it's value. Beautiful Stuff! Custom knives are Big.
