Help with humidor

I bought my husband a Thompson's travel humidor. I am trying to set it up before I give it to him. I can't get the humidity to stay up. I get it set at 70, and it drops so fast... like down to 30 and 40.
Also, do you know where I can find local cigars for him that are cheap but still taste like the expensive ones? We live in Michigan.
Thank you.

If the humidor is made out of spanish cedar it is droping because the wood needs to absorbe the humidity before the humi will stay at 70% ... but im still new there are probally more reasons why this could be but that is my first thought. Try putting a bowl of distilled water in there or wiping the humi down with distilled water not to much because it could make the wood warp and try not to keep opening it.

Where in Michigan are you from? I'll tell you whats in your area.

you need to leave it sealed for at least a day before the humidity will stay in. if you keep opening it you are shooting yourself in the foot.

Try wetting a sponge with distilled water and leaving it in for at least a day, put a plastic bag underneath it. This should help to stabilize the humidity as the wood absorbs the moisture. Humicare crystals are also good when seasoning a new humidor. I would suggest keeping it at a stable humidity for at least a few days before putting in cigars.

First of all Welcome to the Forum!!

You will not go wrong here, and I think you have already been given good advice. Just remember to be patient, it will take a few days for the humidity to settle down, and then you will be on your way!

No water directly on the wood - it can hurt the humidor in many ways.
Sponge in a dish, bowl of water all good ideas.
