hole punch, clipers, V cut?

I started out using a gillitine (SP) cutter then had a V cut as I liked the draw then tried a hole punch which I liked best.

I bought this book at Half price books called the cigar companion and it said that the only way was to use a gillitine because the V-cutters and the hole punch cause the cigar to be more harsh and burn hotter.

Has anyone else heard this and what are your thoughts?

Thanks
Martin

I started out with a single guillotine for all types, then went to a
double guillotine.
Like the double for torpedos.
But have been using a punch for rubustos lately.
Never tried a V-Cut.
Like most other aspects it's up to personal prefernce.

I have a Xikar so that handles most any cigar. I have tried punches and v's but I find they tend to accumulate tar around the cut faster. That's what causes the draw issues.

I use a nickel plated .375 Holland and Holland case that I champhered to a sharp edge. Works great and it's big enough that I won't loose it.

I can see that someone may say that a hole or V cut may cause the cigar to heat up since the draw would be tighter then taking a cigar width cut away from the cap. With a tight draw one may pull harder on the cigar causing the cigar to heat up. When a cigar heats up too hot, the negatives I believe tend to rear their ugly faces! Tar build up increases causing the sour taste that allot of us have experienced in the past.

I like a double guillotine and take off half the cap wherever possible. When I don't smoke a cigar too fast, the cherry stays small, the ash stays tight and the smoke is fantastic!

My 2 cents....for what it's worth :p

That's some really good advice.

I always use a punch for everything and I have noticed that my cigars do get too hot near the halfway point. I usually just blow out then wait a min or two before I draw again. About another inch then the taste and heat just turn me off completely.

I'll try your method, eclipse, and see what the difference is.

Thanks.

well there always is the old stand by 1 puff or draw per minute is supposedly the text book standard for achieving the best smoke. Take a cigar you have smoked in the past and try taking the guillotine to the cap instead of punching and see if you still have the same problem. If you do have the same issue, then you may be smoking your cigars too fast, but this is only my opinion.

Glad to help where I can!

Least I can do for a man of our Armed forces! I have a jar head father in Law who is 55 and begging for them to take him back so he can go to the Gulf! i respect the hell out of him, and all the men and women who feel the same.

Ooo-Rah Devil!

different cuts for different cigars,
torps, V Cut,
coronas, a pass with the xikar,
double coronas & large "A" sized I like a punch ,
lonsdales & robustos, what ever I can find in my pocket
I dont like anything over a 54 or a 56 ring , just to big for my dainty size hahahahaha , 48 to 52 ring is where I like to be, about 6 to 8 or 8.5 inches long, first thing in the morning right after my Don Carlos III & a lot of black strong coffee , Heaven ! , as they say at Indy, gentlemen , Start your engines !
Enjoy, Vince

Thanks all. I learned a fair bit her and on the links dbrad4d posted.

Vince, why would you use a V-cut on a torpedo?

Thanks
martin

the V cut gives the torp more exposed surface are to allow the smoke out, it isnt very deep but it is wider than the tip of the cigar, like cutting a carrot on the bias so you get a bigger slice than the carrot is in diameter , , I have a large desk top V cutter in my smoking room, it is made from lexan , clear 7 looking good with brass gears & brass handle to move the blades , , it will take the tip of your finget off if your to drunk to get the cigar in the right hole & get a finger in instead, NO I DIDNT ITS A BUNCH OF LIES , being spread by some drunks who were in my smoking room when it happened !hahahaha ! Enjoy, Vince

The problem with guillotine cutters is that people have the tendency to cut off too much. The punch cut is pretty idiot proof. To avoid a harsh taste make sure you are using a large enough punch realative to the ring of the cigar. This will prevent buildup at the head.

Yas Sir Macallan, IDIOT PROOF. I find that I can use a punch no matter how much I have to drink and not hurt myself.

I use the old JR University tip of setting the guillotine cutter on a flat surface and inserting the stick. Perfect cut everytime and no worries about slipping up and cutting off a finger tip (Not that anyone is saying that you ACTUALLY did that Vince.)

Actually, I tried them all, couldn't decide, so........I just bite the end off and save the little bit off piece between my cheek and gum.....a little snackie for later

its all a big lie, no one ever put there finger in the table top V cutter , it was the big hole for the cigar , & the tip of the finger just got caught in the little hole of the cutter, But IT NEVER HAPPENED LOL enjoy Vince ,

Yeah Mac the punch is pretty idiot proof. That's why it works for me :D

Vince, I will have to try the V-cut on a torp. Question for you, do you ever have nightmares about your cigar cutter? Wake up from a dead sleep screaming "No I put the cigar in the cutter!".

Cheers
