Hi all,

Around five months ago I bought a wheel of Honduran Primeros Churchills. I smoked a couple of them and thought they were horrible. I almost tossed all of them in the trash…but I put them in a plastic bag instead.

A couple of months later I tried another one. Again, it sucked. I almost tossed all of them in the trash…but I left them in their plastic bag instead.

A couple of days ago I took one out and smoked it. Again, it sucked…or so I thought. It was very harsh and bitter tasting. I almost tossed it, but since I had nothing better to do (and since it was to hot to smoke a “good” cigar), I continued to smoke.

About one third through it things started to change. The bitterness went away. The harshness turned into a spicy vanilla taste of medium strength. Surprisingly, I nubbed that cigar. WTF?

The next day I tried another one. The first third sucked - bitter harshness galore. Last third was great…a smooth vanilla with spice taste.

I cut one inch off the top of the next one. No bitterness was encountered. These Churchhills are great if you cut them down to 6 inches.

I want to buy another wheel so I can let it age for a couple of months. I’m thinking of buying the Toro size, but if this size also has the harshness-on-the-top problem, I would rather get another wheel of Churchhills (and cut the top off).

Can you guys give me your opinions? Did you have a similar experience with this cigar? Are the Toros smooth from the beginning or do they also have some bitterness at the start?

Well,
I bought a wheel of Toro's a while back and I was not overly impressed. Only because the are light to medium and I prefer stronger. For a buck a smoke, they are fine and smoke well. They do get better with alittle age and the taste improves after an inch or two....

I probably won't get them again, but they are not bad smokes.

I bought the Toros. Did not have any bitterness with any of the 47 I have smoked. Have had some burn issues, but for a buck a piece I can deal with that. I will order more in the future. I keep my bundle sticks in a small, playmate size coolerdor with some spanish cedar. They seem to do ok.

Ravyn is correct, they are on the mild side. If they were more on the medium side I think they would be better.

Yeap...somewhere in the middle of light and medium. I also prefer stronger cigars, but every now and then I like to smoke a light cigar (Fonseca SG Cedar or a Gispert). The Primeros are an excellent light/medium smoke with a ton of great flavor.

Hmm. Perhaps I will stick with the Churchills size then. The cutting one inch off method is working rather well for me.

maybe you get it too hot when you light them?

I don't think so...I light all my cigars the same way. I don’t have problems lighting other cigars. More importantly, I don’t have a problem (as far as harshness) lighting the trimmed down (6 inches from the original 7) Primeros.

Welcome to the Forum elvergun!! Good to see you could make it over.

Nice observation on the Honduran Primero's, lot's of guys around here smoke those and should be able to tell you all about 'em!

Agsain, Welcome!! :) :D

maybe if you take a few out of the celophane and let them rest naked in a humidor for a while they will improve?

That might make a difference ... I took almost all of mine out of the celo when I got them since I figured I would be smoking them, not handing them out. I liked the toro size.

It is a cigar that just takes time to warm up. Cutting it down in theory should not change anything but if it does then buy the churchill and cut it down. They are all the same price anyway.
