I employ a lot of methods but lately I have been using my fingers. I look like a pro now.

if im picturing myself doing it right, i see it as not being the best cut. Can't say im very skilled with my hands though.

You use your nails and in a delicate pinching fassion pinch and cut the end of the cigar. The result looks like bullet or punch cut. It takes some practice.

I can only be silent for a period of time. You suck.
Clipping is an art forum.. Cuban's by strong tooth & spit... Europeans buy cutters- which I collect- pre 1900. Current- the best- post 1900 is a Credo Synchro Double Guillotine@$100.
Americans and others cutters don't compare. What id the best?

Are you back Malone? Welcome!

I am currently using a cheap double guilotine, I am not always happy with the results. I have a Xikar on the way...I was hoping it would be better. I have never liked the punch or V cuts. I have used a sharp knife with some success and my teeth on rare occasion, but have never tried Macallan's Pinch.

I prefer to use my fingers, it's the easiest and most hassle free to me......

But I will often use a scissor cut, that is the other easiest for me to get the perfect cut which I desire.....

Great Poll

Malone,

You have really turned every aspect of smoking into an art all its own. I actually use every style of cutter made to keep it interesting. The V is a fun one becuase no one uses them anymore. I am interested in your antique cutters. If you ever get any pictures please post them.

Everything depends on the situation one may be in. Especially when talking about Cigar etiquette...

If I am in a very nice restaurant or lounge, I will use a cutter for the sake of being "Proper" I tend to always use matches though, since that is more traditional than a lighter, not as easy but a lot of fun...

Malone, you seem to really enjoy the traditional ways when it comes to cigar smoking...

Even though cigar smoking is all about the individual, there really are no wrongs, with the exception of manners when it comes to cigars, especially in Europe. A lot like manners at a dinner table, there are manners when it comes to smoking....

i.e.
You never gesture with a cigar in your hand....
You never speak with a cigar in your mouth...
You never let another man light your cigar for you, especially while holding a flame in front of you, but it is okay to light a cigar for a woman. (Traditional remember)
You never leave the band on....(Ironic to me, because it was the Europeans, a Dutch man who invented the band in the first place to make his cigars stand out from rest, or another theory, is that it was to protect the gentleman's white dinner gloves from getting tobacco stains).

There are more but that's the idea...

There are proper ways and personal ways to do everything....and cigar smoking is included in that

If I'm in the yard I tend to light the cigar w/out lighting the foot, as opposed to when I'm in a settled environment I won't even put it to my lips until it is completely glowing, and after I let it sit a minute to cool down....

I'm ranting but

That's my two cents anyway....

I tend to use a guillotine 1 or 2 bladed because I like a large cut. Bigger than a punch ot a bite or pinch. I like a big draw and always lots of smoke.

I agree whole heartedly with Smoke on this one. There is no right or wrong way to smoke your cigar. It's all about the individual.

Having been brought up in England, I've had manners and tradition drummed into me from an early age. So, no matter where I am, I cut my cigar with scissors, or a double guillotine and light my cigar with 2 large matches.

I appreciate what Malone is saying, but we all buy our own cigars and at the end of the day we can do what we like to them.

When I have friends over for dinner- we smoke fine cigars on my rear porch.
There is always a choice of Single Malt( Murray McDavid), Port or French Sauterne. The clipping of cigars is a choice for the smoker.I offer the following choices: a Cuban Chaveta( a difficult cut- but fun), a 1880 circa brass handled cutter that I just sent to a member of this form as part of a trade, a Credo Synchro Double Guillotine, a German 1920 V pocket cutter, 1880 American Chavetta,Xixar cutters- (3) and others. Just fun.
Lighting options are wood matches, Blazer torch and plumbers handy torch. Again much fun.
Sometimes after too many beers- we just chew the end off and light them on the grill.

I've never tried 'pinching' to cut my cigar. I use double guillotine for most of my cigars. I punch my padron 1964/26's though. Just a question, when is 'pinching' appropriate? Smaller cigars or larger? Usually I smoke toros and robustos so the head of the cigar is quite large and I don't know how I'd pinch something that size.

I'm glad to see that Malone is back! I use a double-blade or occasionally even an electric cutter that I have for anything except cigars with a flat head such as Padron's and Punch Rare Corojo's in which case I use a punch.

Axegod... electric cutter? You must explain. The padrons tend to have a short cap. It is very easy to cut to much with a guillatine and then there will be the inveitable wrapper problems. I am with you guys, a punch cutter is a valuable tool in those cases. To answer the other question, you can use your fingers on all parejo untapered cigars.

How would you go about 'pinching' the cut? I'm guessing you need semi-sharp finger nails or something haha I'm going to try this pinching method the next time the temperature goes up (the temp. dropped from mid 20s celcius to around 10 celcius these past two weeks so it's really chilly out :?)

I had been using a xkar cutter up until 2 months ago when I got an Avo double punch. Fits right on my keychain, no security problems when flying, large punch on one end, small on other. For me works the best and I never OVER Cut or Bite.

I picked this up a few years ago on eBay for around 12.00 w/shipping. You place up to a 54 ring gauge cigar into the cylindrical part and pull a lever on the rear of the unit. A surgical blade spins inside and makes a very fine cut. The tray shown is where the clippings are collected and the yellow piece can be adjusted up or down depending on how much of the cap you want to remove. I use this cutter sparingly due to the fact that I haven't been able to locate a source for replacement blades. If anyone knows of any, please let me know.
Nevertheless, it's never given me trouble and it makes a great conversation piece.
