hygrometer is off

I have bought two hygrometers one from cuban crafters and one from holts and done a salt test on both and they both read 82% the next day can someone help me out?

If they're both reading the same, how can it be off? maybe it's the salt concentration you're using?

Hopefully someone else with more knowledge can help.

does it really matter what type of salt to use because i just used some cheap salt

That's very strange. How many hours are you letting the test run? The salt shouldn't matter, but you can't use too much water. The solution has to be like a paste.

Do you double bag it? That's important, just to be sure that none of the outside environmental factors are present. Even though plastic bags are supposed to be nonporous, sometimes there could be a slight imperfection which might be letting in air somewhere. It's really baffling, but other than double bagging, it sounds like you're okay. And if you're double bagging, then it's REALLY baffling. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Here's another thing. I just noticed you live down south. What's the weather like? Temperature, humidity? That could have something to do with it, and in some cases, a lot.

I used a glass jar that has a gasket like seal on the top so i know it was sealed correctly could it be the type of salt i used or the temp maybe?

do it again in a dark place. and how much salt did you use? i have found that the test with only a bottle cap full isnt very accurat, i use like a measuring cup full in a tupperware container. to make sure the ammount of water is right, i just drop water on one side of the cup very slowly till the salt stops absorbing to the other side. then add a little more and stir it up.

are you using salt from the Dead Sea?

you may have the salt & digi to close to each other and need a bigger
space to work in.
A nice clear(ish) tupperware and lean the digi against the wall so you can see it from the outside.
This way you get a reading without opening the container.
Try to give a little space between them!

talumn, you are not the only one having trouble with this. Last night I put my Oasis XL, Diamond Crown Digi, and an accu-rite digi all in a tuper container (off to one side) and added the salt to the other side. today the reading are this:

Accu-rite = 73%
Diamond Crown = 69%
Oasis XL = 79%

now I have no idea which if any of them are correct, or if the actual RH in the container is 75%

I have to admit that I am beyond frustrated with this  :(

I think you should try the test again, I had a new hygrometer that did the same thing. It turned out to be a weak battery. Its not likely you have 2 gauges with 2 bad batteries, but, I've seem weirder coincidents..

I use one of those plastic cups that come with cough syrup, fill it 2/3 with Kosher salt, make a moist paste. And i use a tupperware. i'tried the glass jar and it didn't work for me. I got a high reading with it.

jesse what was your reading when you used the jar?

I used the regular packet but there is also a calibration kit. I highly suggest this.

Thanks, Quag. I will look into that.

It has been two solid days in the salt test, now. yesterday, I opened the lid to get a reading on the Oasis, then closed it up again. today they had stabilized and I got the exact same readings, so I am assuming that they are all working properly. Is it out of the ordinary for the Oasis to read 4% high? and should I also adjust my setting to compensate for this variance?

* intersting to note that the cheapest one (the accurite @ about $12) had the most accurate reading.

There have been serious issues with the new Cigar Oasis.
They are all having trouble (not reading/setting up)
I do believe there is a replacement program in effect.
I haven't had much time online this last few days -
I'll see if I can dig it up the info.

Tested all my hygrometers again, since it seems to be going around :D

All my digitals were in the +/- 4 or 5 %.

My analogs were either dead-on or +/- 1 %

Go figure.

It's a terrorist plot!!! We're going to screw up the calibration of the hygrometers in the Western World. When they can't even smoke their cigars in peace, they'll go mad, we'll rush in and take over!!! :cryinlaugh:
