I have a hygrometer that cam with my humi and it reads 40%RH and I also have a digital meter in the humi and it reads 71%RH. I did a salt test with the digital one and it 2%RH off. I have had the humi for a few weeks now and and was wondering should i even pay any attention to the hygrometer or just look at the digital meter. I know that the hygrometer can go up high becasue the first week I had it I had a bowel of distilled water in it for a few days and it was up to 55%RH. Then I got the digital and did the salt test. I also just got some humi beads and have had thoes in for a few days. Another question is should I have the beads in with the hygro pucks(basically a glorified spong according to cigar.com radio broadcast number 2) that usually come with a humi? I have 2 in the humi now. Any advise or suggestions would be great. Smoke on my friends.

i have an analog hygrometer.
i have Humi beads. they are the 65% beads. my hygrometer reads 65%. when i salt test it reads 75%.

i do the salt test whenever the hygrometer deviates. Ive done it twice. once when i got it. once after i put in the beads. I had to adjust it by about 5% when i first got it. its been spot on ever since.

that being said.

THe digital is a better hygrometer. more accurate, easier to read, and it probably has a thermometer on it too. if you have a digital use that over the analog.

Salt test and adjust the analog one and keep it as back up. Just know that you are taking a chance with it.
I know i am.

Pick-n-Stick-

I am a seasoned noob to cigars myself, but here is some advice I can give that helped me out a lot.

1st--as doc said, toss the analog. I got a digital hygrometer/thermometer made by Fluker's from petsmart (yes, the pet store). It is made for small reptiule cages, so it fits well. $20.

2nd I got one of the HUMI-TUBES from heartfelt industries (heartfeltindutries.com). Mine is a 65% humidity and it holds it spot on. To recharge it (usually every 10 days or so) I will wrap it in a couple of paper towels and then mist the towel wrapped humi-tube until it is damp. The crystals will them soak up the water (DISTILLED WATER ONLY!!).

With that set up, I have had no problems at all.

My cat litter crystals have been rock solid 63 - 65% for almost three months now, I don't even worry about it anymore.

Like HammonC said, go with a Flukers, you won't go wrong. They are the perfect size for a humidor.

Just my 1.85 cents worth.

Ditch that analog as fast as possible, maybe not ditch, I kept mine because I think it looks nice but I depend on a hidden digital in my humi. I have never used the litter or humitubes as I have a relatively tiny humidor. That ends next month when I become the proud owner of a 500 ct, that will signal the time for an Oasis XL and a new digital hygrometer, peace of mind is a good thing.

pick-n-stick, glad you got your advice 8) This is definitely the place to ask anything and get rock solid advice.

Cloudy, what kind of 500-ct are you getting. Can you post a link? I've been looking for one that size.

Digital all the way. I have one on the top of my frigidor and one on the bottom. I also bought one more for my old frigidor for when I redo that.

Even if the analog is salt tested and recalibrated, it is more prone to deviate. A digital will not unless its batteries are low. Then they can give some wildly innaccurate readings. I replace the batteries when I change the clocks just like the smoke detectors.

Not sure what you mean by the beads and puck question. Do you mean put the beads in the credo? If so, you can but it most likely will not hold enough volume of beads to be effective. I think Jesse52 did that with his but still has some other dishes of beads.

No, I have the beads in a dish and the pucks(1 at each end of the humi) have the spong/green stuff in them. My question was do I use the beads with the pucks or just go it alone with the beads. I have a 300ct. humi (not filled with cigars yet) and the right amount of beads for that size of a humi. So I am thinking the pucks would be an over kill. My beads re set at 65%RH and reading 71%RH minus the 2%RH that the digital meter is off and I get 69%RH. SO its a little high but in a few days it might come down with out the pucks. Maybe it not being filled yet is giving a higher reading.

I would not use the credos unless you're only using distilled water. PG will eventually clog the beads. Plus the beads eliminate any need for them.

As to the empty humi, not being filled is likely part of it.

Cloudy: Thanks for the link, that is the exact same one I've been thinking about ordering. And I will as soon as I stop spending all my $$ on cigars
