Is 55 too cold for cigars?

After seeing all these great coolidors I want to make one now. The only problem is I don't have room in the house, but I do in my shop/ someday den building. It is heated , but I keep it around 55 degrees to keep heating costs down. If need be I can raise the heat, but if 55 is alright I will just leave it. So what say you my knowledge base?

Thanks
Martin

I'd say "too cool", but I'd rather be a little cool than too warm!!! At least beetles won't hatch in cool weather, but the cigars may tend to dry out.

10 degrees warmer would be better, IMHO! 8)

From what I understand, 55 won't hurt your cigars. But, it won't allow them to "age" either. So, if you aren't trying to age them, but just keep them, then you are probably fine. If you want to age them, you probably need to get up closer to 70. I've also heard that it is harder to keep the relative humidity up where you want it at the colder temp.

I'm sure you'll get more definitive answers soon, but the short explanation is you should be ok.

My coolerdor is a steady 60 degrees in the winter and my humid is stready between 68 and 70.
I haven't noticed any problems.

55 is ok IF you can keep your humidity in the 58-62 percent range. I would think it is very hard to keep your humidity up at that temperature.

I have a small humi in my garage with temperature that floats in the 50's and the humi stays steady as a rock in the mid 60's. (Just a regular credo and water monitored regularly.) Not sure how a larger humi would hold.

its definitely too cold for me much less my cigars. got down to 45 last nite. but thank goodness back up to 75 today and no more nasty cold for at least 10 days they say.

as the Temp goes Down the humidity should go Up , just like in the summer when the temp is up you drop the humidity , I dont know what the rate of change is , but some one a lot smarter than I am should know, & that is a wide open field including a few Golden Retivers hahahahaha Enjoy, Vince

55 is fine. I know have seen some incredible collections stored around 58.

As already stated, if you can keep the humidity up (around 60-62 for me) you are doing great.
