SOOOO...I just got off the phone with Final Fantasy 11, an online gamer company in California. Spoke with June, very nice lady! It appears that some 12 year old (or 42 year old living in his mothers basement, no offence to you if you read this)...stole my credit card number and opened an account online and then passed it off to his friends. So far they were able to cancel 11 accounts, only 2 have been billed the others are pending. I also have a charge on SKYPE. Unfortunately, the phone company does not list a contact phone number so I have not been able to report/dispute it with them yet. As of now I have canceled my CC and will be getting the money credited back. But now I have to run my Credit Report, change my bill pay, and be without my CC for 11 friggin days!

My question...Do I need to report ID theft? Do they have my Social Security Number, or are they just a bunch of "Kids" who dug a receipt out of a garbage bin and use it to play video games...

You also need to dig more into where they got your account number from since online retailers require the CC number, expiration date, and security code which none of these are fully on your receipts. Especially the security code.

Thanks Kevin, I just reported it to the credit companies...
I have been wondering the same thing about where they got all my info....I have no clue how they could have gotten that info. Hell, it could have been some waiter at TGI Fridays that took my card in the back and wrote down all my info...Everything i read online about it says that there is really no way to tell how they get it...I consulted a lawyer (other than Kevin) and he said he doubts they have my social # or if it is going to be ID theft due to the fact they are buying online gaming characters with the info and not spending it in locations where they would need an ID to make a purchase

Connor,

Just remember DL's theory. It just all makes since. The pieces are falling into place, my old friend.

This is typically how it's done. Some waiter or waitress snags the info off of a card either by writing it down or by swiping it through a card scanner. Definitely sucks and is an inconvenience, but you should be good now that you have canceled the card.

When they end up getting your social they wouldn't be able to use your current card, but instead open new cards that they would charge up. Which makes it much more difficult to dispute & i've seen it take a long time to get off of a credit report.

Sad people do this garbage.
