New cutter, piece of junk!

So I thought I would buy myself something nice today. I needed a new cutter, and I thought I would spurg and buy a nice one. Well I got this...

It is a total piece of crap! It has butchered 3 cigars! It cuts about 1/4 through and stops, then smashes the rest of the cigar. I tried it once, and thought that maybe I am doing something wrong. So I attempted 2 more cuts (on cheap flora de oliva's) and it ruined the ends of both.

Hopefully the guy at the store will exchange it for me...

Anyone have this cutter and had a positive experiance?

the xikar double guilotine cutters are top notch. if you hold them firm and do the cut fast they will never displease. i never have the cap unravel anymore. i used to get that all the time with other cutters ive used.

Ya I think if he will exchange this for me, I will get one of those. It is really a neat looking little cutter, and it even has a spring loaded punch. I was looking forward to cutting my cigar all day with it while I was at work (12 hours of hell on an ambulance in Oakland) then the total dissapointment when it not only didnt cut very well, it ruined my drive home cigar (smoked it anyways). Oh well!

I have that one. I haven't had a problem yet. You have to hold it in, just pierce the wrapper with the point, switch hand positions so that its in you palm, and then very quickly snip it. However it was sold to me as having a replacable blade which it does not have. You could take it apart and sharpen it, but I have found that it will be pointless as its ring capacity is only about 45. I will be replacing it with a pair of collapsing scissors.

I use a double guillotine...forgot the make but it was only a buck or two...been working flawlessly for about 6 months now.

The absolute truth is that if you don't use a cutter that has two blades coming from each side you risk ruining the cigar. With one blade, the stick ends up getting smashed against the blunt side of the cutter. With two blade, both blades cut in the same amount of the way through the stick (halfway). It is pretty hard to mess up a cut with a double bladed cutter.

Use Xikar if you can!
They are very good, my swiss army knife has a cigar cutter that is the best cutter I have ever used.
After that I'd say the Xikar Multi-tool ROCKS!
If ever it seems dull (any Xikar) they will sharpen or replace it for life!
Can't beat that deal - Anywhere!

lol, wow.. I havent given cutters much thought... for some reason.. I dont know....

I just cut mine with my pocket knife...blow off the loose pieces and light up...

I'm a big fan of the xikar multi-tool. Never leave home without it!

ok, this is a random thought, but i thought it would go well here.
you guys remember the movie alien, right? (the first one)
when they were going through the tubes with the scanner looking for the thing, they would close off a section, the door had a bunch of pieces that would slide together until it was just a little pinhole in the center.
ok, so if you know what im talking about now, (if not go back and watch it -- one of the best suspense movies ever,) i wanted to make a desk top cutter with numerous blades like that door...they would all swirl together, cutting from all sides at once. how f****** awesome would that be!
it would take some figuring to get it going, but god would it be sweet

ive seen a cutter like that, this guy that owns this cigar shop back in sacramento had one. it was pretty neat.

i would like to have a nice desktop model that would cut automaticaly, i think some one on the board had one, you just drop the cigar in a tube or somthing and it cuts it.

Well, you are only supposed to snip about 1/16th of an inch of the end. Anything more isn't really necessary and could possibly cause the cap to open up.

Personally, I prefer a punch cutter for everything except torpedos ever since the first time I used one. I like them because they are easy, you get plenty of smoke, and you get the taste of the unburnt wrapper while smoking. Also good if you like to chew on the end a bit.

Calibus,

You shoudl try your punch cut on one of your torpedos. It is nice. You punch a hole in the wrapper about 5/8 on an inch up and smoke it. When you smoke it keep the hole pointed toward the roof of your mouth. It draws the smoke upwards onto the roof of your mouth. It is interesting and enjoyable.

Yeah, I have actually done that before. I just find it easier and preferable to snip a bit of the tip off. I do on occasion do it that way but it is usually when I don't have my Xikar with me and I only have my Prometheus lighter with the punch cutter built into it.

Thanks for mentioning it though. It is a good idea for other people to try because it isn't something most people would think of. I didn't think of it on my own, someone else told me about it.
