Got my new 150ct humi on wednesday. I put the right amount of beads in it and I put 3 water pillows in a cup (instead of a cup of distilled water) Friday morning the humi was holding at 64-65% (65% beads) So I removed the pillows. friday night holding at 64-65 I put about 20 cigars in. Mid day on saturday the humidity was @60-61% and the beads needed water. Re filled the beads and let it sit. This afternoon the humidity was still at 60-61% so I removed the cigars, topped off the beads and put a cup of distilled water in. I guess I'll let it sit for a few more days. I may have rushed things. The humidity level in my house is running at 41-45% Any thoughts or suggestions?? I did not put the humidifier that came with the humi in it. I was hoping to use just the beads. Thanks in advance for the help. :? :? :?

I would probably charge the humidifier and put that in. Wait about two or three days then put your cigars back in. If the RH keeps after another day or two, you're gold.

The beads are enough to keep the humidor.

Were the cigars dry when you put them in there?
That would explain the drop.
I would not worry at 60%
I think putting the beads and cigars in the humidor will be fine.
If it still stays to low add a shot glass of water to the humidor over night & then take it out the next day & see whare your at.

the cigars are fine I think. I took them from my older humidor and that is staying around 65-68% All of the cigars are at least 3-4 weeks in that humi. I think I may have just jumped the gun, and it wasn't quite seasoned yet. This is a Cuban crafters humidor i bought from Humidorswholesaler.com. I've not heard of any problems with these humi's. Thanks for advice

60% shouldn't hurt your smokes permanently, at least for the few weeks it'll take you to either get your humi working or decide it's a POS (had one) and get another. It's just a little below smoking humidity. Worst case you'll just have to drop by the shop a few times to have something ready to smoke.

Honestly my guess is 60% @ 70 degrees would be just fine for long term storage. I think a bit wetter would be better for smoking though. Still, I prefer to defer to those with more experience. I just have a strong expectation that 60% for a few weeks won't hurt anything aside from smoking the cigars stored at 60%.

Thanks again for the info. I have enough room in my older humi to hold all my cigars for awhile. I have a few new Fuente humi bags just incase I need extra storage.. I'm hoping this humi isn't a POS, so I'll give it at least 2 or 3 more days to see it it starts to stablize. This is my first time with beads. I'm assuming that 65% beads should hang around 65% once the humi is well seasoned.

You might look around for some of the Boveda bags. I've never used them, but I have seen one model on that line that is designed for seasoning a new humidor. The others are designed to hold your humi at a particular level, and they have three different ones from which to choose.

Congrats!

Right now in Texas the humidity is so low I can bareley get a full humi above 60% and my cigars smoke fine.

Just remember not to make sudden changes in the humidity as the wrapper will crack. -- Been there done that.

The first thing you need to do here is to check the accuracy of the hygrometer that you are using.

I prefer to keep mine between 62-66, and long term storage at 60% isn't even harmful, except your cigars will be aging faster than normal. If you have cigars that are notoriously mild, that means they will become flavorless and kickless even faster.

The hygrometer is new and I salt tested it. It was perfect. The humidor is holding @ 65%. Been there all day long. I'll give it another 24hrs then I'll take the bowl of water out. and see what happens. Just to comfort myself, I did the dollar bill test and the flashlight test. both are fine.

Basically you close a dollar bill in the lid of your humi and pull. If it is a good seal the bill pulls with resistance. If it slides right out, you have a leaky lid. Flashlight test..put a lit one in you humi, turn off all the lights, (make room dark) if you see light leaking out you have a bad seal. If no light is seen, your good to go.
