You all know the, "what's your deserted island smoke" question?
Well, here is a variation.
Normally, your budget says that you have only a limited amount of "disposable income" (income for cigars and non-necessary items). All of a sudden, you find yourself with a windfall.
With this amount of money, you could:
A) Buy one box of your all-time favorite smoke, normally you treat yourself to one or two of these cigars a year - if you can justify it. (25 ciars)
B) Search the specials and get yourself as many of your normal smokes, the better ones, as you can. (you can get about 4-to-1 ratio in comparison, or 100 cigars)
C) Get some of your all-time favorite - say 5 or 10 - and spend the rest on other smokes. (depending, on how you plan this you are looking at about 50 cigars total)
So, what would you do?
Why am I asking the question? Well, to be honest, it is a dilemna I am personally facing.
I personally both both pipes and cigars. I enjoy one or the other about 4-7 times a week. When fishing I may indulge a bit more, but I enjoy savoring either one - taking the time to do so while not rushing with something else that requires my total concentration. Of course, a pipe can be an aid in contemplative thinking.
I must admit as well, that on my income, I can smoke the best tobaccos at a fraction of the cost per smoke of even a reasonably priced cigar ($0.50 a smoke -vs- $2.50 a cigar). But smoking only as often as I do, some of my pipes do not get smoked as frequently as they could (I have 17 pipes). Add this the fact that I thought I'd like a few more excellent cigars... So, I have sold one (a Castello Sea Rock), and have another I'd like to sell (a Castello "Castello"), in order to take tthat income to stick some cigars in my humidors. I thought I knew what I was going to do, but now I am not sure. Exquisite quality??? Quantity? A mixture?
What exactly are my thoughts?
A) A box of Padron 1964 Anniversarios Monarcas or Excluvios (maduros)
B) CI specials - RPs, Gurhkas, and others so that I come out to about $2.50 - $3.00 a smoke
C) 5-10 of the Anniversarios and the rest B selection.
Wish I could do A&B, but....
Oh, I also have an option D (this is my personal list) floating around in my head. I love fishing. My sons (11 & 13) love fishing. They'd like to start Steelheading with me. I could set each of them up with a serious, high-quality stick and reel for about $150 each. The 13 yr old is probably ready for going out in the streams - the 11 yr old is (at heart), but not by size. Of course, the question is, are they mature enough to care for equipment in that price range? I got them some servicable equipment last year, cross-species sticks that are really better suited to walleye and finese smallmouth fishing, but can be used for Steelies.
Anyway, I thought it'd get a great discussion going.
Oh, if anybody knows where I can get Padron 1964s in either of those two sizes for less than $255 a box, let me know.
Peace be with you.
Todd
