You all know the, "what's your deserted island smoke" question?

Well, here is a variation.

Normally, your budget says that you have only a limited amount of "disposable income" (income for cigars and non-necessary items). All of a sudden, you find yourself with a windfall.

With this amount of money, you could:

A) Buy one box of your all-time favorite smoke, normally you treat yourself to one or two of these cigars a year - if you can justify it. (25 ciars)

B) Search the specials and get yourself as many of your normal smokes, the better ones, as you can. (you can get about 4-to-1 ratio in comparison, or 100 cigars)

C) Get some of your all-time favorite - say 5 or 10 - and spend the rest on other smokes. (depending, on how you plan this you are looking at about 50 cigars total)

So, what would you do?

Why am I asking the question? Well, to be honest, it is a dilemna I am personally facing.

I personally both both pipes and cigars. I enjoy one or the other about 4-7 times a week. When fishing I may indulge a bit more, but I enjoy savoring either one - taking the time to do so while not rushing with something else that requires my total concentration. Of course, a pipe can be an aid in contemplative thinking.

I must admit as well, that on my income, I can smoke the best tobaccos at a fraction of the cost per smoke of even a reasonably priced cigar ($0.50 a smoke -vs- $2.50 a cigar). But smoking only as often as I do, some of my pipes do not get smoked as frequently as they could (I have 17 pipes). Add this the fact that I thought I'd like a few more excellent cigars... So, I have sold one (a Castello Sea Rock), and have another I'd like to sell (a Castello "Castello"), in order to take tthat income to stick some cigars in my humidors. I thought I knew what I was going to do, but now I am not sure. Exquisite quality??? Quantity? A mixture?

What exactly are my thoughts?

A) A box of Padron 1964 Anniversarios Monarcas or Excluvios (maduros)
B) CI specials - RPs, Gurhkas, and others so that I come out to about $2.50 - $3.00 a smoke
C) 5-10 of the Anniversarios and the rest B selection.

Wish I could do A&B, but....

Oh, I also have an option D (this is my personal list) floating around in my head. I love fishing. My sons (11 & 13) love fishing. They'd like to start Steelheading with me. I could set each of them up with a serious, high-quality stick and reel for about $150 each. The 13 yr old is probably ready for going out in the streams - the 11 yr old is (at heart), but not by size. Of course, the question is, are they mature enough to care for equipment in that price range? I got them some servicable equipment last year, cross-species sticks that are really better suited to walleye and finese smallmouth fishing, but can be used for Steelies.

Anyway, I thought it'd get a great discussion going.

Oh, if anybody knows where I can get Padron 1964s in either of those two sizes for less than $255 a box, let me know.

Peace be with you.

Todd

I would venture to say my father was in your same situation when I was about your oldest son’s age.
I loved to fish and have always used my dad’s hand-me-down rods and reels. I would fix them up and take good care of them. At about 14 my father gave me my own, rod and real, vest and a very large selection of some of our favorite fishing tackle. It may be one of the most memorable gifts I ever received. I feel that because I loved to fish and respected my father, I took care of that equipment better than anything I have ever received. (I still have not parted with the rod, reel and vest and hope to pass them down to my children).
IMHO, you will always be able to purchase more smokes and maybe one day you will come across that extra income to buy the premium smokes, but your children will always remember that gift and the responsibility of taking care of it.
And don’t forget, if you were a good boy this year, the Ole president may be sending you a nice bonus!

As for the premium sticks: Ashton VSG, Padron 1926, and Gurkha Centurion

OK, my humidors are looking a bit thin , so here is what to fill it with , Pardon 64 maduro Priniciie,Hemmingway masterpiece, ( just to show I like BIG & Small smokes), some Vintage 96 Pardomo tubed churchills , in the white tubes , Olivia series V ,Figurauto
, a few assorted contraband cigars in a few different sizes & brand names , & my favorite morning smoke the Don Carlos #4 , I will also need a supply of GOOD coffee, & a few cases of single malts from Scotland, & Ireland there might be a blend or 2 tossed back at times , & for cooking , a blend is more cost effective , but nothing can beat a salmon cured in Laugavulin !

B128thopen,

Absolutely right about the fishing gear. Have done that with the boys, their new sticks last year. They do take incredibly good care of them. That's why option D.

Now, B128thopen & Vince, I want to thank you for the suggestions on which sticks to put in the humidor. I agree with most of your suggestions, am not a fan of Ashton VSGs though - maybe the two I had were the bum cigars in their respective boxes - but I do not feel they are worth it, even if they were 1/2 the price.

But, you didn't answer the question. Given the circumstances given at the beginning of the post as laid out in the scenario, what option would you pick - A, B, or C? (Ignore the personal stuff that makes up the last 1/2 of the post)

:)

I would buy the box of stix I rarely had the coin for. You will have that normal desposible income for the less expensive stix. But remember if you are like me now matter which one you pick, you may wish you picked the other one.

Todd, I would go for option A and get the sticks that I normally wouldn't get because of price. Oh, I love Padrons 1964's!!!!

OK, I ordered the Padrons, Monarca Maduros. Now, have to hold my anticipation in check. Haven't had a Padron 1964 since this summer - got a couple while on vacation.

Going to go have an Edge Corojo Toro tonight, to try and simmer my craving a bit.

Thank you all for your assistance. I actually thought that this thread would take off a bit more.

Now, where on Your American Backyard Forum can I go to try and sell a Castello pipe? I know it says that you are only supposed to sell stuff in the sales area. But, there are no cigars, pipes, or pipe tobacco listed there. Was wondering if that is the only place to sell stuff. And, if those who even be interested in such stuff go there to look for pipes, tobacco, or cigars there?
