Almost daily it seems, there are threats to our individual liberties. As cigar enthusiasts this goes double. Across this great nation we face a barrage of anti-smoking laws, smoking bans, ludicrous cigar taxation, and other encroachments on our basic rights as adults to enjoy a handmade cigar. Here in Pennsylvania, it is getting worse by the day and there is in fact a critical issue that I am writing you about today.
Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell recently proposed a large new tax on cigars. Pennsylvania has historically had a strong and vibrant cigar industry, thanks to low taxes and a welcoming business climate for cigar companies. As a result hundreds upon hundreds of new Pennsylvania jobs have been created in cigar manufacturing, distribution, and retail over the last decade. The Governor's new tax on cigars will not only increase the prices you pay but will severely damage Pennsylvania's cigar industry - forcing companies and jobs out of state. Our state cannot afford to lose more jobs and those of us who enjoy a cigar should not be targeted simply in the interest of political expediency.
