How do you guys determine how long (if at all) to age your cigars after you get them? I've got quite a few mellowing in my humidor, but I'm always tempted to smoke them right away - I want to let them have some 'alone time' first, but I have no idea how much is enough or if some cigars are actually better with less aging...

I guess the best way, at least what I've found to be the best is by buying a box and slowly smoking them, journaling the progress of age...I'm doing that with a couple boxes, some I'll smoke one every other month, some I'll smoke every six months...Then when the box is done you can go back nd review what you thought over time...you might hit a sweet spot and smoke the whole box up, I imagine that will happen with my Cien Anos Churchills...Although Jose Blsnco says those cigars will be even better in years to come, we'll find out, hopefully.

It depends on the cigar too, if it is a mild cigar, don't let it age too long otherwise it will become too subtle and be tasteles, bodiless...For aging, the heavy hitters usually do better...

Hmmm - hadn't thought of doing it that way - most likely because I don't have room in my humidor to keep several boxes aging at once...

that's a good point...
Well, perhaps it may be time to look into a coolador or a cabinet...sounds like you should make the move!! :D

Shhh - be vewy vewy quiet - don't let my wife hear you saying that! She's finally warming up to the fact that I have a small 50ct box. If I suggested anything bigger right now - well lets just not think about that.

The bad thing is that she's right - we have quite a few expenses in the near future (I think you spend more after you buy a house than you do ON the house) - if that wasn't the case, I'd be keeping my pimp hand strong, but alas, a larger humidor is a ways off...

Cigarsmoka has a great idea, but you don't need to buy boxes in order to do that. For example, you told me you bought the Don Bienve's in two five packs. So, smoke one now, then another a few days later just to make sure that you're not getting an "opinion" from just one cigar. Then wait three months, and smoke another, or two. Then wait six months, etc. You will soon learn which cigars you like right out of the box, or after how much aging you prefer a certain cigar.

For example, I recently bought a box of Mayorga Maduro Churchills. Since I already knew that I can't handle these things until about a year later, and I really bought them with the intention of including some in packages I send to other people, I just put them in the bottom on Desk Top II. The ten or fifteen I'll keep for myself will be ready for smoking some time around the Super Bowl. If for some reason you can't buy boxes, you can even do this when you buy a few of a certain cigar.

Go to ebay and look up Maverick humidors.
I bought a 50 ct for $25 and a 100 ct on auction for $26.
Both are brand new! I got the 50 ct around 7 months ago and I'm still waiting on the 100 ct. Ther are pristine humidors. Quality work that would easily cost 4 times what I payed for them.

It's worth looking in to.

and here in lies the rub my friends! You want to try this thing aging, but you don't have the room....That's how it always starts!! Next thing you know, you're down at the Sams club or costco shaking like a methadone patient two hours late for treatment, whilest looking for the biggest possible cooler you can buy!!! All is well my friend, when my wife was uncomfortable with the 58 gallon coolidor I built, I told her we could easily order a nice big cabinet humi that would match the decore....believe it or not, she bit! "I'd rather have a nice piece of furniture then that bohemouth!"

Good luck and God speed!! 8)

damn eclipse, thats awsome. 50 bucks... 600 bucks, she takes the more expensive option based on looks only lol. women are nuts but some times it works to our advantage.

And that, my friends, is how I got my first flat panel television!

"Well, honey, it mounts on the wall...."

Things are turning up for us it seems...or we all just have understanding women...that's the secret though, it's either this big ugly cooler, or this classy cabinet show piece...It's a no brainer, well, not to the check book though...

Cabinet Humidors - don't ask

As for age, well strong cigars age better the mild cigars.
I have always been of the thought that everyone's tastes are different and you should always smoke what you like.
That said, to me - cigars get better with age!
I agree that without some tyoe of housing project it is hard to age enough cigars enough to see what all the fuss is about.
Unless you are friends with people that age cigars and can let you try what your used to with some age on it?

So tell us what you been smoking?
