Ok This may sound odd but I am wondering what are these rating based on? How many cigars are great but not rated as so? What I am getting at are these rating based on the cigar itself. Or does the rarity play a part? Like Cubans that are supposed to be the best in the world when I would disagree. How much of there hype is do to the forbidden fruit factor. How much does price have to do with quality? I had one of my Cuvee's and while it was good I myself would rate it lower then others I have had. Is there a standard system by which the cigars are rated?

I would check out the ratings system at cigaradvocate.org. That will give you a good idea on how ratings are based.

as far as i can tell its 100% opinion

if you were following my catalog at all, i explain how i got my rating system. It was based off of a few different systems i found on the internet.

the taste is only part of the equasion.
construction, burn, how it looks, and how it "feels" are other factors.
very subjective.

one of the first times i listend to The Cigar Dave show someone called in and asked "how do i know im smoking a good cigar"
Dave said: "when you put it in your mouth, you like it."
that is a great cigar lesson.

I agree with Kuzi, it's all opinion. Ratings merely serve as a guide to help you find some things to smoke that you might not have tried before. That's not to say that I won't try a cigar if its rated low or am likely to try it if it's rated high. I know the flavors and aromas I like, and that's what I look for in a cigar...complexity and balance.

I think that ratings are overrated (LOL) if a cigar is say a $100, and rated 99 and you don't like it what is the point.

but if there is a cigar that is rated a 50 and $1.00 and you love it, that is all that matters

Good way to put it Chris

I can tell you are all beginner cigar smokers.... typical.

The price of a cigar dictates how good a smoke it is, follow along please::

The higher the price, the better the cigar.
Why? Because it makes me look cooler when I flash that expensive band around. If it makes me look cooler, then it tastes better. Then all my friends will like me better and chicks will flock around me.

Cheap cigars = sucky.

Sheesh, newbies... Don't ya'll ever read CA???

BP is right. We could all learn a thing or two by reading more CA and following what it says. Thanks BP for shedding some reality on this thread.

:D :D :D

I think at CA they smoke the cigar till it undergoes a significant change. I thought that was a good thing?

All I know is that I would love to be one of the raters for CA. That would be a fantastic job: getting paid to smoke cigars and then give your opinions. They really do get a chance to smoke some fantastic cigars.

CA is kept running by cigar makers paying them to put ads in their pages.
if there is a full page ad all about how brand X is awesome and then a page or two later brand X is given a rating of 80 then brand X wont ever give CA money again. CA has some good stuff. i just dont listen to the ratings so much.

Burn, construction, aesthethics, flavor profiles, as well as many other things go into a review.

But a lot of things that are subjective go into a review. This is why I don't really pay any attention to reviews. A cigar may have an uneven burn for somebody that is anal, but for somebody with patience, it may be right on. A wrapper may be hideous to somebody, but the cigar fantastic. But still it may lose points.

Plus I don't like reading reviews of things I haven't had yet. I want to be the judge of what I like without any outside input to cloud my thoughts. If I have had it but can't place a flavor, I might check it out, but beyond that I have no use for reviews.

I dont think anybody can see my band without standing on a ladder. Why Just carry one good band and use it on all your cigars??

Thats exactly what I do. The band says: "Get away from my cigar".

Personally I do read reviews but pretty much ignore them. makes sense huh? I read reviews (CA I am talking about) because the pretentious writing style gives me a laugh here and there, especially the "classic" cigar reviews. Apart from that, cigar reviews are pretty much useless to me.
