Smoke the cedar?

I got the friday deal a couple of weeks ago, (XiKar cutters) and they were delivered with a small cigar.com catalog. I was looking through it, and admiring the CAO blacks, which I think I am going to have to buy. Here is my question though: The picture of the gentleman smoking a CAO Black appears to still have the cedar wrapper in place. Are you supposed to smoke it while it's still on? Or is the photo mis-leading? I went to a local store to try some out, and they didn't have the Black line, but they did have a cigar wrapped in cedar. I picked it up (it's at home, I'm at work- will give details later) and the cedar wrap is fairly loose, and I don't see anyway of smoking it while intact. The owner of the shop seemed to think it was a stupid question of me to ask, and pointed out that you normally use cedar to light cigars. I've seen this, and pretty much knew that, but I was asking because of the picture I had seen. I know that you guys won't rip on a newbie too much- so who can tell me the whole story?

:p forgive me for having a chuckle Mann :p - thats about all the ripping ill do  , but no, you do not smoke the cedar

I figured as much- but has anyone else seen the picture I'm talking about? I'll try to scan it in tomorrow---

I think that was Donny in the picture. You can call cigar.com and ask fo Donny. I'm sure he'll explain.

I know that you can light cigars with the cedar strips (forgot the name), but can you use the same cedar that is wrapped around the cigar?

But why? does it add flavor? i think it would make it taste like cedar. JMHO

Whatever you do, do NOT smoke the cedar. The cedar is there to help retain/absorb moisture, and some say it adds flavor while the cigar ages.

But when you're ready to smoke the cigar, REMOVE the cedar wrap before lighting up the CIGAR. Keep/toss the cedar wrap as you please.

The age old argument with the use of lighters on cigars is that the fuel aroma/taste can be transferred to the cigar, therby altering the flavor of your (maybe) pricey smoke.
Remember that cigar boxes, and good humidors are made of spanish cedar, generally regarded as a nice complement to a good cigar. I do not know first hand, but I imagine that the cedar has another use, either for a natural insect repellency, or a tendency to retain moisture. Either property would make it ideal for usage with our precious puros, no?
I'd recommend folding that cedar sheet into splits, lighting it with a a match or torch, and using that to casually light your smoke.
Benefits:
A) you will be using the lovely cedar to ignite your cigar, no worries of ruining the flavor pre-draw
b) You WILL get mad respect by anyone within view, Trust me on that one.... 8)

Rob the Debonair....

AND,
just looked at that photo, it is indeed Donny.
Know what I think? I think he's smoking a cigar with a connecticut shade wrapper in that pic.....I call foul!

now THAT is a good idea

One of my buddies did that in a bar and he was corrected many a time by the local cigar aficianados

After looking at catalog closely, I have to admit, it does sort of look like I'm smoking the cigar with the cedar sleeve still on. I can assure you I'm not!

But now that you guys have brought it up... I hope you all enjoyed the catalog...we just received the first copies of the new catalog...I have to say...I think it looks amazing! Start lookin' for it in the next two weeks!

(sorry for the threadjack)

"The owner of the shop seemed to think it was a stupid question of me to ask, and pointed out that you normally use cedar to light cigars." What an asshat the owner turned out to be, he had an opportunity to do a new cigar smoker/customer a good turn and he blew it! Makes it all the easier to deal with a friend like Donny who will share knowledge. 8)

Doc,

I smoke any and all cigars that come my way, I call it "research and developement" 8)

I did see a guy smoking his Romeo with the cedar still on once at a party. I asked him how it tasted and he replied, "It doesn't really affect the taste, but it helps the ash to stay on longer." The point he made was true!
