Just met with the Fire Chief for my township and, this time next month, I'll be a member of the West View Fire Department! I've been wanting to do this for some time now and I figured that today would be the best time for it.

Time to light up!

Good for you bro. Very honorable! What better way to pay tribute to the men and women who fell this day 5 yrs. ago. I, for one, am proud of your commitment.

If you have any questions, you let me know. I'll have you Captain in no time!

Questions? Ha! I don't even know what questions I should have!

The cool thing is that there are 3 engine companies in West View and the one I'm joining is the busiest. They have a 105 foot ladder truck and an air unit. They support our township as well as several others nearby. This company is primarily ventilation and search/rescue. They'll support the regular engines once the primary tasks are complete.

Maybe a good question for Capt is: What should I do? Heh - not really sure if there is anything special I should be thinking about or doing...

Congratulations brother - you have been given a great honor and a great privledge in being able to serve!!

God bless you, Cybrus. Cops and firefighters have been some of my biggest heroes all my life, especially in my adult years, which have been MANY!!! You certainly have a big pair. I burn my finger with my lighter a little and I'm whimpering.

You guys notice how Cybrus comes on telling us how he just became a firefighter, and the first thing he says is let's light up? :cryinlaugh: :sm_angel: Talk about jumping in with both feet first.

Give it time, the fire will come to you. :cryinlaugh: :rotflmao: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: Please be safe, and may The Lord be with you, every time the call of the dead moose* goes out.

*In many suburban and semi-rural suburban areas, the fire departments are all, or nearly all, volunteer based. As a NYC city kid, when I first starting visiting Westchester County a lot back in the 70's, once in a while, usually at night, this very loud noise went off somewhere in the region, and I was told it was the alarm summoning the firefighters in the area. I said it sounds like a dead moose. :dunno: :duh:

A dead moose? HAHAHA

That's pretty accurate for one of the nearby stations though. My station sounds more like an air raid siren...

Congrats Dave. Glasd to hear the good news. I was beginning to thik that you were not show up as often around here. Glad to sse you.

Yeah - it's been a bit crazy lately - I'm starting to get back on track with everything and hopefully caught up on some packages that I owe people.

It's a volunteer position - none of the suburbs around Pittsburgh have paid firefighters - only inside the city limits.

The three fire companies in West View have approx 80 volunteer firefighters, but only about half of them are active. There is no duty roster - if you hear the siren or get a page and you can make it, then you head to the station - for each call, they only get an average of 20 showing up. So, they're definitely in need of more people.

I wanted to be part of a volunteer FD but they do not have any around here. They are all paid positions and full time at that. A lot of politics to get on those FD's.

Its mostly full time here. McHenry and a few of the other "smaller" cities are still paid with more and more going full time. I'll hopefully be starting school in the fall and will get on before McHenry Changes.

It's official! I got sworn in tonight as an official member of the West View Fire Department. Got my pager plugged in and get my equipment this weekend.

Congratulations Cybrus. You do realize that the pager won't go off until you are an inch into an Opus X don't you?

Congratulations!

Cloudy is right too. The pager will always only go off when you least want it too.

I'm sure - that or when I'm in the bathroom...doh!

Got my first call last night - now it feels real!
